Ken Wold Wins NRCHA Derby Open Hackamore One Stylish Playboy

Ken Wold, of Wilton, California, topped the Open Hackamore class riding One Stylish Playboy, owned by the Diamond RB Ranch of Murphys, California.

Wold showed the 5-year-old gelding by Docs Stylish Oak and out of Playgirls Miss Cross (by Freckles Playboy) earlier in the week in the NRCHA Open Derby. However, having come down with a severe case of food poisoning, Wold felt he wasn’t able to show the horse to his best ability.

“He did really well in the herd work, but in the rein work, I was just too sick to give the horse a fair shot,” said Wold, who nearly had to withdraw from the event itself. “I knew he was good, so when I started feeling better, I decided to enter the Open Hackamore with him.”

For One Stylish Playboy, it was only his second Hackamore class ever, and Wold was more than pleased with the results.

“He got hurt, so I spent a year getting him healthy,” Wold explained. “So for him to come in here and do this today after only being shown four times in his life, I thought was pretty good.”

Wold won $2,148 for the victory, while Jake Telford rode One Shiney Chic to the Reserve Slot with a 422. One Shiney Chic, by Smart Chic Olena and out of Miss Shiney Cat, earned $1,790 for her owner, Aspen Meadows Ranch, LLC, of Park City, Utah.

In the Limited Open Hackamore Class, Mike Lund took the top prize on Wanna Win A Prize. The horse, owned by Katy and Tim Murphy of Arroyo Grande, California, is by Smokums Prize and out of Outta Cash Blues.

“My horse got a little strong out there on me, but we got it done,” Lund said of his run. “We had a decent cow, and she’s just a real nice horse. Usually, she’s pretty easy to get along with.”

Lund and Wanna Win A Prize earned $2,100.
