Success in Kentucky Prepares Katherine Newman for Devon Horse Show

Wellington, FL – May 22, 2006 – As the Devon Horse Show draws near, Katherine Newman of Wellington, Florida’s Allwyn Court Farm has her game face on. The fifteen year old, who trains with parents Kathy and Gerry Newman and Olympic Show Jumping veteran Todd Minikus, is showing and catch riding to prepare for the prestigious Devon Horse Show in Pennsylvania. She piloted multiple rides for top honors at the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, and her experience on numerous horses is clearly paying off.

After topping the leader board in the WIHS Hunter Phase and the WIHS Jumper Phase for the overall WIHS win last week and also winning the USET Show Jumping Talent Search class, Newman returned for the second week of competition at the Kentucky Spring Classic Horse Show. Both weeks, Newman competed in the equitation classes with Timeless, owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. This week she ranked second in the USET Show Jumping Talent Search and also earned second overall in the WIHS Equitation class.

Over the past weekend, she was also asked by Tom Wright to catch ride a sales horse named Wyntoon. She showed Wyntoon, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Ingram, in the ASPCA Maclay class. Having only ridden the unfamiliar horse for a short period of time, Newman rode beautifully and took home second place.

“He’s new to me, and I’ve only ridden him two times,” said Newman about Wyntoon. “He was really good, easy, and really fun to ride in the ring. It was a bit more challenging to ride a horse I don’t know that well. I love doing it because I get more experience, and I like doing things that are harder.”

When asked what she thinks about before going on course with a catch ride, she replied, “I mostly think about the same kinds of things on every horse I ride, unless the horse has a certain quirk about him or something special I need to pay attention to. But I just try to focus on the course and what I need to do.”

In the Small Junior 15 and Under Hunters, she piloted Corvet Z for consistent placings in the Kentucky Spring Classic Horse Show. Corvet Z is owned by Allwyn Court and showed in the Regular Conformation Hunters for the first time last week with Todd Minikus. He rode the horse again this week, taking home six second place ribbons and the reserve championship.

“Corvet Z was very, very consistent,” she said with a smile. Her mother and trainer Kathy Newman added, “Corvet Z was fabulous. He’s new to the Regular Conformation Hunter division. Honestly, he’s one of the best horses I’ve ever had- a beautiful jumper, scopey, careful, and just the best.”

In the same class, Minikus also rode Almelo, Mimi Abel-Smith’s Amateur-Owner Hunter. “Almelo is an Amateur-Owner Hunter, and normally Mimi Abel-Smith shows him,” explained Kathy Newman. “She is in Spain right now, so we had Todd show him. I think it was one of the hardest courses Almelo’s ever had!” She exclaimed, “He’s so fat and his belly is so big. He’s a really good jumper, and he was up for the job. But, I think he’s back sleeping in the barn right now, and he’ll probably sleep for another week.”

Katherine Newman rode Castleton in the Large Junior 15 and Under Hunters for a win over fences, two third places, and a sixth. The pair also earned the reserve championship for the division. Castleton is owned by Pamela Dudley of Upperville, VA.

Kathy Newman commented, “Castleton is a First Year horse, and he continues to prove that he can hold his own with the made Junior Hunters. He’s been champion or reserve five weeks in a row now, and he’s been up against the best of the best. They’re all here, and he’s just proving to be a consistent, quality competitor.”

In the jumper arena, Katherine and Royal D’Or, owned by Mimi Abel-Smith, finished in second place in the Low Junior Jumpers. “With Royal D’Or, I was really happy that she felt like her old self,” commented Newman. “I was really glad she was back in the ring, and she really wanted to win. The course rode well. In the first round, I just kind of went around. Then I let her gallop in the jump-off, and she just did her thing.”

Katherine Newman’s next competition will be at the Devon Horse Show, held in Devon, PA, from May 25th through June 3rd, and she will compete with Timeless in the equitation classes.
