A Nostalgic Horse Icon Makes a Come Back

The coin-operated horses in front of the ‘ole Five & Dime were where dreams came true for those young wannabe cowboys and cowgirls of yesteryear not lucky enough to have a horse of their own. Now these old-time vending machines are being transformed into stylish pieces of equine home décor.

In the mile high city of Denver, Colorado, Kiddie Rides USA often customizes these coin-op horses for each owner. Sue Tanner from New Hope, AL requested her horse be painted to look like her all-time favorite horse. Denver businessman and Wyoming ranch owner Bill Schwartzkopf ask that his horse be “branded” with the brand of his ranch. He also asked that the name of his steed - “Diablo” - be monogrammed on the base.

“’Nellie’ (a horse ride) arrived last Thursday in perfect shape,” said Will Lewis of Kansas City. “My young grandsons came over to our house for their first rides. What a blast! For me it’s a throwback to the past and a lot of fond memories of begging my parents for a ride when we were in town.”

They’ve even worked on a couple of projects for ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. One of the fun ones for Extreme Makeover was when the decorator asked us to paint a carousel horse ride using the colors of the youngsters bedroom. It turned out spectacular!

Kiddie Rides are equal parts thrill ride for kids and grandkids and nostalgic pieces of Americana for the adults. For over half a century, kiddie rides have captured pop culture in miniature. And now, the trend is just starting as folks are placing these American icons in their homes. A kiddie ride is especially cool when the ride captures someone’s interest or hobby. For example, a Ghostbuster memoribilia collector purchased a Ghostbuster ride, a pilot purchased an airplane kiddie ride for his grandchildren, or the man who bought his wife a dolphin kiddie ride because she was crazy about dolphins.

With the vast array of rides created over the years, it is surprising just how fitting a ride can be for someone’s specific interest.
