Laura Kraut Tops $8,000 PowerIce 1.45m Competition in Wellington

WELLINGTON, Fla., March 27 - With five horses entered in Thursday's $8,000 PowerIce 1.45m competition, Laura Kraut of Wellington, Fla., was the odds on favorite to win at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

A total of 43 horses attempted the track set by course designer Anthony D'Ambrosio of Red Hook, N.Y., in the International Arena. From there, 11 jumped fault-free and advance to the jump-off. Three of those horses belonged to Kraut including Nocturnal who was double clear in a time of 34.777 seconds to take the win.

"Nocturnal has won four classes this circuit. She is owned by Joyce Williams of Lake Forest, Ill., and she has missed them all. Now she is superstitious about coming to watch, which is not the case at all, it is just that I ride poorly when she is here," laughed Kraut.

Kraut has been riding Nocturnal, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood sired by Indorado, since the mare was a five-year-old and said, "She's a sweetheart. She has been the most easy horse to raise and bring up the levels. She had an injury last year so missed her nine-year-old year, but she's come back strong and feels great."

Kraut also guided Canecko Z to third place in a time of 36.54 seconds while Cedric was also quick across the shortened jump-off track but had one rail down to finish eighth overall.

Sliding into second place to break up Kraut's domination was Twistar ridden by Francie Steinwedell-Carvin to a time of 35.93 seconds. Kraut's 2000 Olympic teammate Lauren Hough finished fourth riding Laura Mateo's Quick Study while Colombia's Roberto Teran rounded out the top five with Distant Star, owned and bred by KingRidge Stables of Canada.

While the majority of Kraut's horses are now finished competing on the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, she plans to ride Le Prestige St. Lois in Friday's $10,000 Wellington Golf Cars Welcome Stake.

Week 11 of the 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, the Penta Water Company, Inc., presented by Palm Beach Toyota, will feature Saturday night's $75,000 Penta Water Grand Prix. It will also be the final event to decide the $200,000 FTI Rider Challenge which is currently a close race between Beezie Madden and last year's winner, Eric Lamaze.

The 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, attracts the best horses and riders from around the world to Wellington, Fla., and offers more than $5 million in prize money. For more information, please visit http://www.equestriansport.com.
