Laura Kraut Wins for Second Day in a Row in Wellington

WELLINGTON, Fla., March 28 - For the second day in a row, victory belonged to Laura Kraut of Wellington, Fla., at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

Hot off a win in Thursday's $8,000 PowerIce 1.45m competition riding Nocturnal, Kraut returned to the International Arena on Friday to claim the $10,000 Wellington Golf Cars Welcome Stake. A total of 57 entries tackled the course set by Anthony D'Ambrosio of Red Hook, N.Y., with 21 jumping clear to advance to the immediate jump-off. From there, 12 were double clear.

In the first third of the class, Wednesday's winner, Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, N.J., guided the chestnut gelding Bradberry to a clear round in a time of 29.27 seconds. It looked as though her time was untouchable until Kraut, one of the final five riders on course, raced around the shortened jump-off track in a time of 29.06 seconds to move into the lead. None who followed were able to come close, giving Kraut her second victory in as many days.

"I am really happy with today," said Kraut, who will now enjoy a few day's of vacation after a heavy competition circuit with garnered countless blue ribbons. "I entered the two horses that I felt I needed to have one more class with."

While Kraut incurred four faults with her first entry of Likewise, who Kraut felt would be the faster horse of her two entries, Le Prestige St. Lois, owned by Freedom Group, did not disappoint.

"He is not the fastest, he is more powerful," said Kraut of the nine-year-old selle francais gelding sired by Quidam de Revel that she has been bringing along for the past year and a half. "He is a small horse, he wouldn't even be 16.1hh, but he has a really big stride. He used to always buck in the jump-off when you asked him to go fast, but he is learning."

Chapot, whose time proves to be unbeatable more often than not, was forced to settle for second with Bradberry. Sarah Segal and True Love took third place by posting the only other sub-30 second time of the day, 29.47 seconds. Eight-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar placed fourth riding Rivendell for owner Susan Grange while U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Peter Leone rounded out the top five with Seduction for Lionshare Farm.

Week 11 of the 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, the Penta Water Company, Inc., presented by Palm Beach Toyota, will feature Saturday night's $75,000 Penta Water Grand Prix. It will also be the final event to decide the $200,000 FTI Rider Challenge which is currently a close race between Beezie Madden and last year's winner, Eric Lamaze.

The 2008 CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, attracts the best horses and riders from around the world to Wellington, Fla., and offers more than $5 million in prize money. For more information, please visit http://www.equestriansport.com.
