Laura Morman is The One to Beat at Gold Coast Series 1

Burbank, California. Laura Morman was a competitive junior rider, but as an amateur she is rapidly becoming the one to beat. “She is a delight to work with,” said her trainer Betsy Woods. “She is a hard worker and was kind of a sleeper as a junior. She is really coming together as an amateur.” At the recent Gold Coast 1 show (February 16-18, 2007) Morman won the Amateur Equitation Flat and Over Fences, as well as the USEF Talent Search and the LAHJA Senior Medal. She was second in the WCE Jr/Am Medal. This is her first year riding as an amateur. Woods has been coaching Morman since she first started riding at the age of eight. “Horses really like her because she is so soft. She is also very analytical and can go to ‘Plan B’ in the middle of a course.” Morman does not get to ride as much as she did as a junior since she has started college. With a goal of becoming a teacher, Morman is studying at St. Mary’s College in the San Francisco Bay Area (CA).

The Gold Coast Series is a popular seven show USEF “B” rated series of hunter/jumper shows produced by the Langer Equestrian Group at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Riders can earn points and qualify for medals for USEF, PCHA, and the Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association. At the end of the seven show series in October, over 20 series awards are presented to those who accumulated the most points throughout the year. “Series awards provide a goal for people, without requiring them to compete at as many shows as you often need to in order to win an association’s year end championship,” explained LEG’s President, Larry Langer.

In the Hunter Divisions, Smoke & Mirrors was for real in the Pre-Green Hunters. Mark Purcell rode to the championship for owner Marisa Berger, and two firsts and a second left no doubt the top horse in the section. Hallie Cameron was just as consistent in the Adult Amateur Hunters when she rode her horse, Rock Steady, to the championship after winning two classes and finishing second in a third class. DiAnn Langer of Langtree trains the pair.

The jumper division has grown significantly in the last seven years, and the Gold Coast shows offer jumper classes for beginning horses and riders up to 1.40 meters. Low Child/Adult Jumpers is a new year end award category for the Los Angeles Hunter Jumper Association. This 3'3" level is very popular, and Kymber Mallory piloted Edelweis to the championship. Adrienne Rockwell rode her Alize to a first and two seconds in the Children’s Jumpers where the pair earned the show championship. Andrew Casey trains the young rider, who also rides in various medal classes.

Gold Coast shows are also very popular with beginning level riders because of the variety of classes. “I really like being able to take our newer riders to such nice shows,” said Jim Hagman of Elvenstar. Sydney Hutchins had a great show after winning both the Short Stirrup and the Green Rider show championships aboard Fox in Sox. The young rider trains at Elvenstar.

Despite the February date, riders were treated to warm, sunny weather and the show had a record number of entries. Over 320 horses and riders competed at the three day show held in six rings. Complete results are on the LEG website (http://www.langershows.com) and the next Gold Coast show is April 6-8.
