Lenas Sugarshine Is Crowned As 2007 Open Two Rein World Champion

As the National Reined Cow Horse Association Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions began Friday, February 22, spectators filed into the Lone Star Arena to watch the World Championship Show finals.

The day began with the Open Two Rein, as the ten top exhibitors completed the rein and cow work. Coming in as the second draw, Lenas Sugarshine, ridden by Jason Grimshaw, marked the class high scores in both the rein work and the cow work (217/217), for a World Championship total of 434.

“He was really good in the reining, and worked the cow real well,” noted Grimshaw following the awards ceremony. “He’s a really good show horse. He felt confident and comfortable. He bound up in the corner, but handled it. I was really proud of him.”

The 6-year-old gelding, by Lenas Sugarman and out of Sheza Shiney Mixer, was started and competed as a 3-year-old reiner with Chris Dawson. Owner Jane McCullough moved him to Grimshaw as a 4-year-old to begin cow horse training. “Jane is a great owner. She’s let me take him and haul him a lot to get him confident,” the Pilot Point, Texas, trainer explained.

Grimshaw added that he plans to keep showing the horse in NRCHA events, moving him into the bridle and showing in bridle spectaculars and the AQHA.

Shiney Tea Pot Doc earned the Open Two Rein Reserve Championship with Steve Metcalf at the reins. Following Grimshaw in the draw, the pair earned a score of 432 (216/216). By Tejons Peppy Doc and out of Suddenly Shiney, Shiney Tea Pot Doc is owned by Carolyn Edson, of Anacortes, Washington.

With the conclusion of the Open Two Rein, the National standings were also finalized. Smart First Lady, who finished fifth in the World Standings, took home the National Championship with Dan Roeser. Smart First Lady is owned by Larry Schroeder, of Belgrade, Montana.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
