Impulsive and Lenkart Speed to Victory in $25,000 Grand Traverse Bay Grand Prix

Traverse City, MI - July 27, 2008 - Scott Lenkart of Delano, MN, continued his great success at the Horse Shows by the Bay equestrian festival today when he and Impulsive took the top prize in the $25,000 Grand Traverse Bay Grand Prix over Kirsten Coe on Starlight and David Beisel with Moet Walk. This was the final day of the second week at Horse Shows by the Bay, which runs through August 3.

The Michel Vaillancourt-designed course was testing enough, and it put through six riders to the jump-off. The jump-off course featured tight rollbacks and a long gallop to the final vertical at the Mackinaw Bridge jump.

"There were only 20 in it and he wants a jump-off, so I don't think it was incredibly technical," Lenkart mentioned. "The (jumps) were definitely square and wide, which Michel always does. There was a question after the (triple) combination that got a lot of people, and with the bridge jump. Some horses really check it out, and they jump it different every time. It was set on the back side of the bridge, (so) there's a shallow area in front of it."

The first to go in the jump-off was Beisel on Moet Walk. They put down a good opening trip, finishing double clear in a time of 42.745 seconds.

Lenkart and Impulsive, a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, were the next into the ring. Last week, the pair was second in the Sunday grand prix, and last year they won two out of three grand prix events at Horse Shows by the Bay. Lenkart and Impulsive made good turns, but their fastest part of the course was the run to the final jump. Impulsive cleared all the jumps and stopped the timers in 40.209 seconds.

Lenkart thought he made up time on course in multiple places. He explained, "I was probably fastest to the vertical, the third jump. I went wider than everyone else to the in and out; I didn't see it early enough. I was definitely fast to the last jump. (The bridge was) the last jump in the jump-off, (and) you had to make sure you were straight to it. I was really worried about that. My horse is pretty careful to a vertical. I can go as fast as he can go to a vertical, and nine times out of ten he's going to leave it up."

Shane Sweetnam and Victor III were very speedy on course with the fastest time of the day, but it came at the expense of a rail at jump 7. They finished with four faults in 37.947 seconds for fourth place.

The only other double clear in the class was Kirsten Coe on Starlight, who finished just off the pace in 40.701 seconds for second place.

Addison Phillips and Cernunnus von Hof made a run at repeating their victory from last week, but it was not to be when they had a rail at jump 13, an oxer with a liverpool. Their time of 38.739 seconds gave them fifth place. Kate Reuter and Online were last to go, but their chances of winning were dashed when they faulted at jump 15. Their time of 41.483 seconds placed them sixth.

Lenkart said that what he loves about riding Impulsive is that he "tries (at) every single jump. If he goes and makes a mistake, it's my fault. It's very rare that he comes home without a prize or a ribbon," he said.

Horse Shows by the Bay starts up again on Wednesday, July 30, and concludes on Sunday, August 3. For more information and full results, please visit http://www.horsesportsbythebay.com.
