Letter from PENELOPE AYERS Chairman of the ASPCA Equine Committee
Equestrian News Release
January 31, 2005
On behalf of the ASPCA Board of Directors and the ASPCA Equine Committee, I would like to address two letters that have been widely circulated concerning the ASPCA’s Maclay class held at the Metropolitan National Horse Show. These two letters, written by Stacia Madden and Leo Conroy, discuss the past and future of the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Class.
Alfred B. Maclay donated the Maclay trophy to the ASPCA in 1933. He served as a board member of the ASPCA, as well as, President of the National Horse Show Association and the American Horse Show Association. He was interested in teaching junior riders responsibility and horsemanship through the experience of horse shows and competitions. This marked the beginning of the Maclay Horsemanship class, as well as, partnership with the National Horse Show. We co-own this class and it cannot be moved away from the National Horse Show without the consent of both partners.
The ASPCA is primarily concerned with the safety of the riders and horses participating in the Maclay. We are aware of the footing issues, as well as, the need for improvements in the management of the ring and schooling areas. It is our intention to work with the Metropolitan National Horse Show to help them make the Maclay class the best possible experience for both rider and horse.
While it is sad that the class can no longer be held at Madison Square Garden, we respect the efforts of the National Horse Show to keep the event in New York City. On a personal note, I have shown at the Metropolitan in both 2003 and 2004, so I am aware of both the problems and possibilities of Pier 94 as the venue for the show.
I believe that the Board of the National Horse Show will do their best in 2005 to work with the ASPCA to make the future of the Maclay class one we can both be proud of.
