Lisa Baker Wins Another Blue in the $10,000 NAL/WIHS Child/Adult Jumper Prix at Horse Shows by the Bay Series III

Traverse City, MI - August 3 - Today marked the last day of competition at Horse Shows by the Bay at the Flintfields Horse Park. People were packing up back at the barns, and riders were finishing up classes and accepting championships.

The class to watch was the North Face Farm $10,000 NAL/WIHS Child/Adult Jumper Classic. Today's class was intense. The course, designed by Guilherme Jorge, was tough for many riders.

The class this morning had close to 40 entries. Out of those in the class, only nine managed to go clear and made it to the jump-off. With a time of 74 seconds there were many riders who accrued time faults, including four who were clean in the first round.

Run according to Table II 2.2a, the course was extremely technical and cost many riders' rails. The combination was tricky for many and required a waiting ride; there were not many places to open up and gallop.

Lisa Baker and her Horse King Tobias were awarded to blue ribbon in the $10,000 NAL/WIHS Child/Adult Jumper Classic sponsored by North Face Farm of Maple City, Mi. With such a technical course, Baker had to adjust her ride in order to get around.

"It was technical, but it was fun. You couldn't run and ride today. You had to time your strides and stick to your plan otherwise the combination was going to take you out," said Baker. "I had to think more organized and more balanced and just kind of let the jump come to me instead of running at them."

Technically-wise, the jump-off was just as challenging as first round. There were not many chances to shave off time, so Baker took the chance to save precious seconds by taking a questionable inside turn.

"My trainer wanted me to do an inside turn that just had an angle to take you to the combination and I didn't think I could do it. I trust her so I tried it," explained Baker. "I rolled back and that really save me time. You watched the other rides and most of them went on the outside and it actually put me at the perfect spot for the combination."

When not at horse shows, Baker has a very interesting program for her horse that seems to work wonders, since she keeps winning.

"I have him on a pretty casual program. We do a lot of trail riding and dressage with him and the only jumping I do incorporates gymnastics work, we jump no courses except at shows. I do a lot of hill work and as little ring time as possible," commented Baker. "If I do any flat work that is very technical, it is out in the open. I think that helps keep him from getting sour. The hills have made him powerful and fresh. When I come to a show and he is in the ring, he is not waiting to get out."
