Lisa Zimmer and L.A. Garner Children's 14 and Under Hunters Championship Tricolor at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show

Lexington, KY - August 2, 2008 - Sunny skies greeted the competitors today at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show. Riders enjoyed the beautiful setting of the Kentucky Horse Park for the forth day of competition. In the Stonelea Ring junior riders competed in the ASPCA Maclay, followed by the Children's 14 and Under Hunters, and the Children's 15 - 17 Hunters. The Children's Hunters completed their first round over fences in the Stonelea Ring, and then went to the Claiborne Ring for their second round.

The ASPCA Maclay began at 2 p.m., and the competition was stiff. Grace Witherwein, of Carmel, IN, would be the second-to-last rider. She and her mount Marley, an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood, had a picture perfect round, and came home with the blue ribbon.

"Well I've been working on the equitation all summer long, just trying to get into the finals in the fall," explained Witherwein. "I've been trying to focus on getting ready for regional Maclay finals, so I was thinking about the job that needs to be done for later this year."

Elizabeth Patz, of Windermere, FL, and her horse Valentin 88 garnered the second place ribbon. Alyssa Mansfield, of Wellington, FL, also had an excellent trip on Lord Lorenzo, and was awarded third place.

Next were the younger Children's Hunters. L.A. and Lisa Zimmer, of Wycoff, NJ, had a top-notch performance and earned the championship tricolor. Caroline Nicewonder and Starbound, owned by Don Stewart of Ocala, FL, took home the reserve championship prize.

Zimmer and L.A. had been having difficulties earlier in the week, so she was very pleased with her victory. "He was really good. He's been really strong, so we've had a lot of trouble lately. Once I stopped leaning with my shoulders though I got all my distances, and then he was really relaxed," she laughed. L.A. is a 9-year-old Oldenburg gelding that Zimmer has owned for three years. She hopes to move up to the junior divisions by the fall.

The last division of the day was the older Children's Hunters. Annie Cosby was aboard Artimus, owned by Ada Cosby of Manakin-Sabot, VA, and captured the championship award. After Dark and Eleanor Rosier, of Columbus, OH, also performed well and earned the reserve championship ribbon.

Nerves were not enough to stop Cosby from having beautiful trips. "Today I was sort of nervous so I didn't ride as well, but my horse was really good. Yesterday I was a lot more calm, so I rode a lot better," she discussed.

Artimus is new to the show ring. "He's a baby. He's 5, but we started him late because he tore his suspensory. This is my fifth show on him, but he was really good," smiled Cosby. "I am hoping to be able to do the juniors on him next year, and my mom will do the first years. She's been doing the pre-greens here and there, but we don't want to overwork him." Cosby believes that Artimus has a great deal of potential, and he certainly proved it today.

Tomorrow the Amateur-Owner Hunters championship and reserve championship awards will be determined in the Stonelea Arena. It will be the final day of competition for the Kentucky Summer Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park. Next week will mark the beginning of the Kentucky Summer Classic, held Wednesday, August 6, through Sunday, August 10, 2008.
