When Liz Mitten Ryan took a leap of faith seven years ago to dissolve her old life, leave her job and relocate with her architect husband to a remote 320-acre ranch she had no idea where it would lead. Never would she have imagined that the silence and secluded serenity would enable her to access a higher consciousness that turned her from world-renown artist to author with her first book One With the Herd: A Spiritual Journey.
As a breeder and trainer of Warmblood horses, Mitten Ryan was awed by the connection and the meaningful perspective she discovered through the quiet of nature and the wisdom of her herd. Through a concept coined “Equinisity” - the gift of finding the unexpected and truly important perspective, through the clear and almost 360 degree vision of the equine, Mitten Ryan began to connect to a higher consciousness that is the essence of all life.
Without the restraints of human dominance, her eleven horses are permitted to roam freely on the ranch they share, enjoying the life of a wild herd. While provided a vast, comfortable barn, each horse can come and go as they please. Riding is done in harmony, with both horse and rider enjoying a mutually rewarding relationship without force or threat. There are no bits, crops or spurs and the horses are all ridden in halters. They follow freely, playing like big dogs. By recognizing these animals as spiritual equals, treating them with the respect, compassion and kindness she would give to any human, Mitten Ryan has been granted access to a very special relationship in which the horses share a deep wisdom and message.

One with the Herd includes lessons that Mitten Ryan has personally learned through living with and listening to her own amazing and insightful herd. A native of Vancouver, B.C., Liz Mitten Ryan is a dedicated conservationist and a true philanthropist. True to her philosophy, Liz believes in sharing her gifts with organizations working to help animals and the environment. Along with the honor of being British Columbia’s Wildlife artist of the year twice, she has also been a national artist for Ducks Unlimited for five years. Her art has been presented to well known dignitaries who support the environment, such as Premiers Harcourt and Clark, Vice-president Al Gore and England’s Prince Philip. Many of Liz’s recent paintings are featured in One With the Herd.
