NRBC Announces Mare Bonus Will Continue

Hot on the heels of the most successful-ever National Reining Breeders Classic, the NRBC has announced that its NRBC Mare Bonus will become a permanent part of the show.

The NRBC Mare Bonus was initiated at the 2007 NRBC and was such a popular addition that the NRBC Board, in a meeting on May 13, voted to continue rewarding the highest advancing/placing mares. In 2007, participation in the program was optional, but enough stallion owners participated to allow the Mare Bonus to pay $34,250, including $10,000 in added money from the NRBC.

Victoria Lambert’s Memorable Affair ( Major Vaquero X Coronas Affair), ridden by Jordan Larson, was the top finishing mare in the Open division and she earned a mare bonus of $9,590, in addition to her other earnings. The second highest finishing mare, This Chics On Top (Smart Chic Olena X This Chex On Top) was ridden by Shawna Sapergia for Outrider Ranch, LTD, and she earned a $7,192 bonus. Third was Collenas Finest Taffy (Footworks Finest X Colleena Chic Olena) ridden by Brian Bell for Double Run Farm to a $4,795 Mare Bonus. Todd Bergen rode Eric Storey’s Wind Her Up Chic (Smart Chic Olena X Wind Her Up Doc) to tie with Chris Ferguson on Adair Reiners’ Escalante Chic (Chic Please X Spanish Dun It). Both earned a bonus of $1,198.75.

In the Non Pro division, Andi Paul’s Darlins Not Painted (Smokin Chic Olena X Mi Hollywood Darlin) was the top mare, and she earned $4,110, with the second-finishing mare, Ruf Pistol (Lil Ruf Peppy X Le Pistolet) ridden by Jose Vasquez to a $3,082 paycheck. Kim Dooley rode Nu Tuf Lil Chex (Nu Chex To Cash X Tuf Lil Cupcake) to third place in the Mare Bonus, good for $2,055. Sally Broten’s Shining Moonstone (Shining Spark X My Lucky Moonstone) collected $1,027 for fourth place.

The Mare Bonus, fully enacted, is projected to pay over $60,000 at the 2008 NRBC, with the participation of all the enrolled NRBC Stallions. The increase in stallion enrollment fees, which begins for 2008, is the first in the NRBC’s ten-year history. Annual stallion enrollments, which have been $1,000 since 1998, will now cost $1,250, including the mare bonus.

NRBC President Tom McCutcheon noted, “The idea behind the NRBC Mare Bonus program was to create an incentive for people to show those mares that will become the broodmares of tomorrow. The program will provide a venue that allows mares to develop substantial earnings records”.

The National Reining Breeders Classic is the most successful stallion incentive program in reining history. In just ten years, the NRBC has grown to include over 300 subscribed stallions and over 18,000 enrolled foals.
