McCutcheon/Rawhides Banjo Win NRBC Non Pro First Round

Mandy Edges Closer to The Million Dollar Mark

Mandy McCutcheon’s 220.5 score on Rawhides Banjo (Dunit Rawhide X Barb A Cita) held up through the second section of the Non Pro Preliminaries at the National Reining Breeders Classic in Katy, Texas. Topping the field at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center earned a first place check for $7,254.

Mandy also qualified for the finals on I Spin for Chics and her total first round earnings brought her to within less than $19,000 from becoming the first Non Pro in National Reining Horse Association history to become a million dollar rider. With two horses in the finals, she has a solid chance to make that milestone at the NRBC where the Non Pro total finals payout is in the quarter of a million range.

Another phenomenal Non Pro, Dr. Jim Morgan of Pilot Point, Texas, finished second in the first round of the Non Pro and topped the Prime Time division on Hesa Friendly (Hesa Smart Chic X Seduction) with his 219 score.

The top 25 Non Pro finishers out of the field of 133 will compete in the Non Pro finals, slated for the afternoon of Friday, April 20.

The bubble score to make those finals in the Non Pro division was 213.5. In the Intermediate Non Pro, that magic number was 211 and in the Limited Non Pro, 207. The top twenty Prime Time riders going to the finals each had to mark at least 208.

In the Intermediate Non Pro, Francesca Sternberg of Pilot Point Texas and Hollywood Dun Star (Hollywood 86 X Commercially Dun) had a score of 218.5 on Tuesday to top the preliminaries and earn $1,215. That was just one point ahead of Sunni Chernega On Shine on Retsina (Shining Spark X Retsina). Chernega, of Apopka, Florida, also won the Limited Non Pro first round.

Cathy Hern of Turner Valley, Alberta, finished second in the Limited Non Pro on Star Spangled Whiz (Topsail Whiz X Sheza Shady Slider), after marking 214 in Monday’s competition.

Earlier in the day, NRBC Show Manager Mike Christian was joined by Great Southwest Equestrian Center Operations Manager Sean Brown and Equine Operations Manager Pauline (Cookie) Cook to commemorate the first NRBC classes that would be held in the newly constructed East Arena.

In a special brief ceremony, Christian cut the NRBC ribbon stretched across the gateway to the arena as announcer Fred Brown expressed the gratitude of the NRBC to the Great Southwest Staff.

Minutes later, the NRHA Classes officially began in the arena with the start of the Limited Non Pro 1 Class and Bryan Luark and Boomen James Foley earned the distinction of being the first NRBC Class winners in the new arena.

Later in the day, all exhibitors and friends were treated to a Back Gate Welcome Pizza Party, sponsored by Point Bank of Pilot Point, Texas.

The show continues on Wednesday, beginning at 8 am in the Coliseum with the first section of the Open Classic First Round. In the East Arena, it’s an 8 am start for the Novice Horse Non Pro Class.

Another must-do event is slated for Wednesday night, when the DreamCross Non Pro Draw Party takes place upstairs in the Coliseum. Everyone is invited.

The NRBC show runs through Sunday, April 22. Admission is free.

The National Reining Breeders Classic is the most successful stallion incentive program and horse show in reining history. In just ten years, the NRBC has grown to include nearly 300 subscribed stallions and over 18,000 enrolled foals.
