Michelle Cowan and Anne Reynolds Top 2009 NRCHA Derby Non Pro Herd Work Prelims

The action at the 2009 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby in Paso Robles, California, began Wednesday, June 17 with the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, and Amateur divisions. Later in the day, the nation's top reined cow horses competed in the herd work of the Jack & Phoebe Cooke Open Bridle Spectacular, and the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular.

The final preliminary set of the Non Pro Herd Work proved to be the toughest, with two riders guiding their entries to identical scores of 216 to take the field of 45.

Michelle Cowan and her 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Wheres My Shine, tied with Anne Reynolds and the very consistent Very Smart Flo Jo for the lead. Wheres My Shine, by Shining Spark and out of Boomerita, is owned by Michelle and her husband, Bill. Reynold's mother, Joyce Pearson, owns Very Smart Flo Jo, who is by Very Smart Remedy and out of Teena Cash Flo.

Carol Roberts rode Ill Be A Super Star to mark the Intermediate Non Pro preliminary herd work high score with a 215. Roberts and the 5-year-old mare, by Ill Be Smart and out of Gay Starlight, bested the rest of the Intermediate Non Pro competitors by four points!

And while the preliminary herd work can help the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro riders secure a finals berth - it also puts Danielle Stanton and Heather Livingston that much closer to a possible Amateur Derby Championship, which is decided in the preliminary competition.

Stanton rode her 5-year-old mare, Panda Lena Prize, by Smokums Prize and out of Pand Delight, to a score of 208. Heather Livingston and Allthatglittersisme also marked a 208. Allthatglittersisme is by Yellow Roan Of Texas and out of Mistys Remedy.

In the Jack & Phoebe Cooke Open Bridle Spectacular, Todd Crawford set the pace on Uno What Time It Is with an impressive 218, taking the lead by a single point. Uno What Time It Is, by A Chic In Time out of Uno What Weeno, is owned by Julie Gibbons. Uno What Time It Is has amassed over $80,000 in earnings in both reined cow horse and American Quarter Horse Association competition.

In the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular herd work, Dema Paul and her stand-out athlete, Primos Bob Acre, took the lead with a 216 - three points higher than the next closest competitor. Paul and the ten-year-old gelding, by Teninas First and out of Bob Acre Angelina, have earned over $170,000 in the show pen.

Both Bridle Spectaculars will conclude on Saturday, June 20, with the rein and cow work.

The NRCHA Derby, held at the Paso Robles Event Center, will conclude with the clean-slate finals on Sunday, June 21. The National Reined Cow Horse Association, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2009, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
