Mike Miller and Bucks Genuine Fever Win 2008 Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Hackamore Title

Mike Miller and home-bred Bucks Genuine Fever captured the Non Pro Hackamore title at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity with a score of 285, made up of a 139.5 in the rein work, and a 145.5 in the cow work.

For the Big Piney, Wyoming, cowboy, the win broke a streak of Reserve finishes at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. “The last few times here – three times in the bridle, including today, and one time in the Hackamore, I have had the low fence score and taken Reserve. I’m just tickled to win a saddle here finally,” he admitted. Even though he reflected on a streak of Reserve titles, he has won his share of Championships and other prestigious wins, including a Reserve at the World’s Greatest Horseman.

Miller and Bucks Genuine Fever, by Playboys Buck Fever and out of Nu And Genuine, won the 2008 NRCHA Derby, held earlier this year, with only a few days of preparation in the show pen. Although Mike noted that the mare hadn’t gotten as much ranch work in between, he was still adamant about the benefit of “real work.” He explained, “Working these horses on the ranch really works for me. They know what real work is – getting to come here is fun for them, plus, they never get too excited, because there might be more work to do. It also helps with reading the cow – for both me and the horse.”

The bevy of prizes Miller received for the win included a Bob’s Custom Saddle, sponsored by Cathy Corrigan Frank, a Gist Silversmiths Champion Buckle from Sonoma Mountain Equestrian & Bonnies Smart Chic, a Horse Hair Mecate from Krause Mecates & San Benito Braiding, a Cinch monogrammed vest from Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers/Outlaw Conversions, and Platinum Performance. He was also awarded a check for $3,864.

The Reserve title went to Marc Bourdet and Meradas Cookin Now, who marked 142.5 in the rein work, and 141.5 in the rein work for a 284 total. They earned $3,091, a Horse Hair Mecate from Krause Mecates & San Benito Braiding, a Cinch monogrammed vest from Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers/Outlaw Conversions, and Platinum Performance.

Winning $2,318 and a Horse Hair Mecate for third place was Jo Anne Carollo and Repeat Plan, who marked a 283.5.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
