Stathis and Thornton Take the Lead in Junior Hunters at Monmouth

Freehold, NJ – August 18, 2006 – The Junior Hunter divisions kicked off today at the 111th Annual Monmouth County Horse Show at East Freehold Park in Freehold, NJ. The Small and Large Juniors were split into two groups based upon the age of the riders. Championships for these divisions will be awarded tomorrow when the Junior Hunters conclude.

In the Younger Small Juniors, Alexandra Arute piloted Folklore to the win in the first class over fences. Folklore is owned by Olympic Dreams LLC from Avon, CT. In the second over fences class, Kaitlin Campbell of Doylestown, PA, led the way on her own Play Me Coltrane. Campbell also earned a second in the first over fences class, giving her a good shot at tomorrow’s division championship.

In the Older Small Juniors, Cool Blue and Alexandra Stathis of Short Hills, NJ, took the top spot in the first over fences class. Stathis then topped the charts in the second over fences class with her second mount, Davis Cup. Davis Cup returned for another blue ribbon win in the under saddle, and Cool Blue followed with a second place finish. Stathis and Davis Cup currently lead the division with Cool Blue not far behind.

For the Younger Large Juniors, Jessica Springsteen captured top honors with Tiziano, owned by Stone Hill Farms in Colts Neck, NJ. In the second class, Alexandra Thornton aboard High Noon, owned by Dunwalke LLC, finished with the win. The pair also earned second place behind Springsteen in the first class. After returning for the under saddle class portion, Alexandra Arute and Scott Stewart’s horse Granted trotted home with the blue ribbon. Thornton and High Noon picked up fourth place in the under saddle and are currently leading the division with the most points.

“High Noon was really good,” stated Thornton. “He already did two days of the Regular Working Hunters, so he was ready to go. I still don’t know him very well because this is only my second time showing him in the Juniors, but he felt great. He’s got such a big stride so he can go slowly but still cover the ground. He jumps so well and so high. Even when you get deep, he just jumps right up,” she added with a smile.

The first class in the Older Large Juniors was won by Mr. Wendell and Elizabeth Lubrano. Mr. Wendell is owned by Horizon Hill Farm of Glenmoore, PA. Stathis came back for another win in the second over fences class with the horse Sports Fan. Sports Fan is also owned by Scott Stewart. Lubrano and Mr. Wendell took home second place in the first round and then rode for the win in the under saddle. The pair currently has the most points of the Older Large Junior competitors.

Today’s equitation classes included the Show Circuit Magazine Children’s Medal. Lydia Todd of Elizabethville, PA, rode beautifully and came away with the blue ribbon. Thirteen-year-old Todd rode her horse, Good Question, and trains with Julie Ely. “Good Question is kind of tricky,” relayed Todd’s mother. “He’s a little afraid of things, but he trusts her with whatever she asks him to do. He’d never been in that ring before, so we’re thrilled to death! She also showed him in the Children’s Hunter and won the Children’s Equitation class. We love this horse show. I’m originally from New Jersey, and going to Monmouth was always the thing to do. This is a big deal for us.”

The Junior Hunter division concludes in the Grand Hunter Arena tomorrow, and the Amateur-Owner Hunters will wrap up as well.
