Morgan Holmes and Smart Shooter Win 2008 NRCHA Youth Limited World Championship

San Angelo, Texas - Morgan Holmes, of Sarasota, Florida, won her first National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship on Saturday, February 7, at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena. Along with the $585 in earnings, Holmes received a Bob's Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist custom buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, a pair of Rios of Mercedes stock boots, a $1,250 Youth Scholarship, a commemorative World Championship vest from Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

The Championship also sealed a deal Holmes had with her father, Jay Holmes. "We made a deal that I would stay in the Youth Limited until I won a World Championship, and then I could move to the Youth Bridle and go down the fence. If I hadn't won, then I would be showing in the Youth Limited again in 2009," the 13-year-old explained. "So I'll start showing in the Youth Bridle soon."

Holmes rode her horse, Smart Shooter, by Smart Little Pistol out of Dial Molly Snip, to the title with a 436 total. "My horse was perfect in the rein work, and I wanted to save him for the cow work, where he's best. My cow in the boxing was perfect, so he really did great," she said.

Holmes' parents, Jay and Rhonda, both help her prepare for showing. "Dad helps me the most on getting ready and working with my horse, and my mom really keeps me motivated. They're great," she said.

Claire Edwards, of Temecula, California, earned the Youth Limited Reserve Championship on her horse, Dun Leanin, by Lean With Me and out of Dun Its Jewel, with a 434. Edwards won $488, a Gist custom buckle from Knight Haulers, a set of custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, a pair of Rios of Mercedes stock boots, an ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, $750 Youth Scholarship, a commemorative World Championship vest, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

The Fort Dodge Animal Health NRCHA Celebration of Champions concludes Sunday, February 8, with the World's Greatest Horseman finals. Ten of the nation's top horse and rider combinations will compete for a payout that is expected to exceed $110,000, with the winner pocketing a check for $30,000. The event will begin at 10am with the herd work, and the Opening Ceremonies for the afternoon performance should begin at noon.
