Equestrian News Release
The 2006 National Reining Breeders Classic kicked off Tuesday, April 18, at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, with the largest Non Pro Classic Preliminaries in NRBC history – 138 entries. Dr. Jim Morgan drew up early to set the leading pace with a 218.5 and won the Non Pro Preliminaries.
Riding Hesa Friendly, by Hesa Smart Chic and out of Seduction, Jim earned $7,429 for the Non Pro preliminary win. From Pilot Point, Texas, he raised and trained his 5-year-old bay gelding, which carried him to win the NRBC’s Prime Time Non Pro Classic last year and split sixth in the Non Pro division.
Nicole Dryden, from Anoka, Minnesota, topped the Intermediate Non Pro Preliminaries with a 218 riding Gun And Tonic, by Gunner and out of Miss Modern Art. Nicole, who won the 2005 NRBC Intermediate Non Pro Championship, earned $1,245 for her 2006 preliminary win.
After marking a 217 riding Boomin Footwork, Deb McCandless of Fort Worth, Texas, topped the Limited Non Pro Preliminaries. Deb and Boomin Footwork, by Footworks Finest and out of Jackies Boomer, picked up $672 for the first-place finish. Deb and Boomin Footwork also topped the Prime Time Non Pro Preliminaries with a 220 to earn an additional $625 after the Prime Time handicap was added in.
The top 20 in each of the Non Pro divisions advance to Friday’s finals where the Non Pro Champion will earn more than $36,000. The National Reining Breeders Classic continues Wednesday with the first set of Open Classic Preliminaries in the coliseum arena and horse show classes at the Mansion. Greg Gottschalk, Neal Broten, Sally Broten and Kurt Bowman won the annual NRBC Reiners Golf Tournament sponsored by Texas Star Bank Monday, April 17, at the Westwood Golf Club in Houston, Texas. The winning team had a score of 61 and earned $280, trophies, NRBC money clips and bragging rights until next year’s tournament.
The second-annual NRBC Texas Hold’em tournament, sponsored by Jim Pierce, followed the Golf Tournament, and Lance Griffin, from DeWinton, Alberta, topped the competition. The tournament raised money for the Reining Horse Sports Foundation and gave exhibitors a chance to relax before the reining began.
The National Reining Breeders Classic is the most successful stallion incentive program in reining history. In just nine years, the NRBC has grown to include over 275 subscribed stallions and more than 18,000 enrolled foals.
