NARHA Distributes $14,000 in Disaster Relief Funds to NARHA Member Centers

NARHA is delighted to announce the disbursement of over $14,000 in disaster relief funds to NARHA member centers in need. NARHA’s nearly 800 member centers offer any number of equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) including therapeutic equitation, hippotherapy, equine facilitated mental health, driving, interactive vaulting, trail riding, competition, ground work and stable management.

In response to the California wildfire season of 2007 and similar disasters affecting other NARHA member centers, NARHA members generously opened their hearts and wallets to support their industry colleagues. The NARHA National Conference and Annual Meeting silent auction proceeds as well as donations collected at the 2007 conference in Anaheim, CA, typically earmarked to offset conference expenses, were donated in whole to the fund. “A great testimonial to the compassion and empathy of the professionals who make up the EAAT industry manifested via the astounding $36,000 which were raised for the fund,” said Carol Nickell, NARHA CEO.

An interim disaster relief task force was formed and the application and review process of objective criteria, largely developed during the 2005 Gulf Coast disaster relief efforts was implemented. Of the four centers that applied for grant dollars, three were awarded funding. The fourth submission did not meet the approved criteria. The centers receiving funds were: San Diego Hippotherapy--Ramona, CA; Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center--Ramona, CA and Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program--Clifton, VA.

A NARHA Board of Trustees task force is currently developing policies and procedures for long-term and more immediate distribution of funds looking toward the future when inevitable disasters will likely arise.

About NARHA:

NARHA was formed in 1969 to promote equine assisted activities and therapies for individuals with and without special needs. At nearly 800 member centers, more than 40,000 children and adults find a sense of independence through involvement with horses. These member centers range from small, one-person programs to large operations with several certified instructors and licensed therapists. In addition to therapeutic equitation, a center may offer any number of equine assisted activities and therapies including hippotherapy, equine facilitated mental health, driving, interactive vaulting, trail riding, competition, ground work or stable management. Through a wide variety of educational resources, the association helps individuals start and maintain successful equine assisted activity and therapy programs for individuals with and without special needs. There are more than 31,000 volunteers, 3,000 instructors, 5,900 therapy horses and thousands of contributors from all over the world helping people at NARHA centers.
