2008 NRCHA Derby Set to Begin

The countdown to the start of the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby is almost over. Riders are checked in at the Paso Robles Events Center and some horses are relaxing in newly bedded stalls while others are getting last-minute tune-ups. You might think of it as the calm before the storm of an event that will take off on Tuesday morning and roll through Sunday, June 22.

On Tuesday morning, June 17, 147 entries will begin competition for a final’s berth with the first leg of competition, the herd work. That will be followed in coming days with the rein and herd work and only 20 Open and 10 Non Pro riders will qualify to compete in the finals set for Sunday, June 22.

But there’s a lot of action to take place from those beginning herd work preliminaries. From record setting entries to a half-million dollar payout, the show is poised to once again be a nail-biting experience. Along with the suspenseful and thrilling competition of the Derby and concurrent horse show, there are special events that are just for fun.

On Thursday night, the NRCHA will host a reception for its sponsors, exhibitors and owners and Friday evening, the festivities continue with the Paso Robles Event Center Barbecue.

On Saturday the show will highlight both ends of the spectrum - with the Celebrity Cow Horse Challenge sponsored by Snaffle Bit Ranch featuring local celebrities and NRCHA Corporate Partners competing for local charities and the Jack and Phoebe Cooke $50,000 added Bridle Spectacular, featuring the world’s best bridle horses.

Bright and early Sunday morning, the San Juan Ranch will host an exhibitor and owner breakfast prior to the start of the clean-slate finals, where the Open Derby Champion will be awarded a bevy of prizes – and a check expected to exceed $42,000!

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
