NRCHA Derby Returns to Paso Robles Event Center

The National Reined Cow Horse Association will return to the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California, June 17 – 22 with another premier event – the NRCHA Derby. Tagged as “Where the Best Go next,” the Derby has proven to be a must attend for cow horse enthusiasts.

Featuring the nation’s top 4- and 5-year-old cow horses paired with veteran and rookie competitors, the Derby is expected to pay out an estimated $359,350. Horses are shown in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, whether or not they have been shown in a bridle elsewhere in their career - an exception to the normally strict bridle rule of the NRCHA.

The NRCHA Derby Horse Show, held during the same week, is expected to pay out an additional $185,000, bringing the total money paid out during the week to over $544,000! Especially exciting for exhibitors is the opportunity to walk away from the show with their checks – instead of waiting for weeks as is the normal practice.

There will even be a concierge service for Derby patrons. The City of Paso Robles Tourism Coordinator, Shonna Howenstine, will be on hand daily at the Paso Robles Hospitality Barn. “I will be able to answer anyone’s Paso Robles questions, give driving directions, recommend a good wine or beer, and make dinner reservations,” she noted. “We’re very excited about the NRCHA, and we hope that we live up to everyone’s expectations.”

The special Celebrity/Sponsor Cow Horse Competition will provide some special entertainment on Saturday afternoon, June 21, with local dignitaries and celebrities joining NRCHA Corporate Partners on 3-person teams as they are coached to exciting performances by top professionals! It’s all fun, and all for a good cause, benefiting the local charity of choice of the winners.

The NRCHA Derby moved to the Paso Robles Event Center for the 2004 Show, and the local community continues to show its support. From the barbecues to enjoying the local wineries, owners, exhibitors and staff feel a fondness for the area. “The Paso Robles community has welcomed this horse show with open arms. We always enjoy coming here,” said NRCHA President Lyn Anderson.
