The NRCHA Raffle Colt Is Now A Filly!

Each year the Ward Ranch of Kingsburg, California donates a good 2-year-old to be raffled off by the National Reined Cow Horse Association, and the drawing takes place during the Open Finals of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. For 2008, the designated colt was a son of Smart Little Pepinic named Smart Response. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the raffle colt is now a filly!

The original 2008 raffle colt, Smart Response, was pulled from the raffle due to lameness from a minor injury. Thanks to the continuing generosity of Ward Ranch, he was quickly replaced, with a raffle filly with the improbable name of Mister Red Pepper. Although all the printed raffle tickets say "Raffle Colt, Smart Response," the 2006 sorrel mare, Mister Red Pepper will be the actual raffle filly won by the raffle winner. Mister Red Pepper is a beauty sired by Mister Dual Pep and out of Hot Peppernic, a daughter of Smart Little Pepinic.

Mister Dual Pep is a 1993 sorrel stallion by Peppy San Badger and out of Miss Dual Doc. Peppy San Badger's get have earned in excess of $21.8 million, while Miss Dual Doc has produced earners of more than $730,000. Mister Dual Pep earned over $43,000 in competition, while his full brother, Dual Pep, amassed over $307,000.

Mister Dual Pep's performance record includes Open finalist placings at the 1997 Sun Coast Winter Championships; the 1998 PCCHA Derby; PCCHA Paso Robles Winter Show; San Diego CHA Derby; and the 1999 Sun Coast Winter Championships. In 1997, he finished fourth at the NCHA Super Stakes in the 4-Year-Old Open.

Hot Peppernic's sire, Smart Little Pepinic has a berth of finalist titles; including the World's Greatest Horseman, NRCHA Year-End Open Two Rein, the Abilene Spectacular, the Gold Coast Winter Show, the NRCHA Hackamore Classic Horse Show Open Bridle title, and the World's Richest Stock Horse Competition Championship. He has sired earners of more than $700,000, including Kiss Me A Little, the 2006 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate Non Pro Champion, 2006 Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Reserve Champion, and the 2008 NRCHA Hackamore Classic Non Pro Reserve Champion. Smart Little Pepinic offspring Smart Plain Pep was the 2006 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Bridle Champion.

As always, the raffle filly will be presented center-arena during breaks in the futurity action at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, September 21 - October 5.

Each year, half of the raffle proceeds and $150 from the entry fee of each NRCHA Select 2-Year-Old Sale entry are combined to make the NRCHA 2-Year-Old Sale Purse. Those funds result in a purse of at least $30,000 to the Open and Non Pro Sale alumni most successful in the Snaffle Bit Futurity Preliminary competition.

Mister Red Pepper will come with a paid entry fee into the 2009 Snaffle Bit Futurity. Because of their top breeding, the raffle colts and fillies have a great chance to do well at their futurity. In fact, one raffle filly, Gypsy Reminic, finished as the Open Reserve Champion in 1989.

The $10 raffle tickets are available from the NRCHA Office. They will also be available at the Snaffle Bit Futurity until the winner is drawn. For information, email to nrcha@nrcha.com.
