2009 NRCHA Stallion Stakes Set to Begin Wednesday, March 25

With the start of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes beginning Wednesday, the NRCHA Staff and Show Crew have prepared for a busy week at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho.

The NRCHA Stakes, held March 25-29, is one of the association’s premier events, and has been held at the Idaho Horse Park since 2006, after moving from Tucson, Arizona. Last year the event paid out over $371,000, with Tucker Robinson, of Oak View, California, earned top honors on Days Zanolena in both the Open and Intermediate Open divisions.

Also last year, Russell Dilday, of Porterville, California, earned the Penny Knight Drag N Fly Ranch Open Bridle Spectacular on his talented horse, Topsails Rien Maker.

Along with the Stallion Stakes and the horse show featuring a full-slate of NRCHA-approved classes, the event also hosts the Cowan Ranches Calf Branding on Saturday, March 28. There are four members to a team, with four steers to be “branded,” or, in this case, painted. In 2008, it was the team for Treasure Valley Livestock who emerged victorious. That team was made up of Terry Russell, Richard Eugerin, Mike Eugerin, and Jason Eugerin, who turned in a quick time on four steers.

But it wasn’t just cow horse exhibitors and cowboys who enjoyed the action – Idaho Governor Butch Otter and First Lady Lori Otter were also in attendance. Governor Otter was even on hand for the awards ceremony – handing out first place checks and the impressive Marlin rifles.

Prior to this year’s Cowan Ranches Calf Branding, the National Reined Cow Horse Youth Association will host the first-annual NRCHYA Wheelbarrow Races. In its inaugural year, the NRCHYA will use the Races as a fundraiser.

The NRCHA Stallion Stakes is open only to foals by NRCHA Subscribed Stallions, and the successful program boasts over 200 enrolled stallions. And while the show pays large amounts of prize money to the competitors, it also recognizes the sires and their owners who are the backbone of the program. Last year, over $15,000 was paid out to the owners of the stallions who sired top finishers in each division of the Stallion Stakes. The big winners were Matt and Lesley Day of Hooker Creek Ranch. Their stallion Smart Zanolena sired Days Zanolena, who won both the Open and Intermediate Open divisions. The check for the Open was $4,000, and the Intermediate Open Sire Award was $1,000.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2009, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes John Deere, Adequan®, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
