Open, Limited Open, and Non Pro Hackamore NRCHA World Championship Finalists Determined

Robert Chown, of Gainesville, Texas, rode Short And Royal to the top of the thirty-horse Open Hackamore World Championship preliminaries at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions. He scored 441, comprised of a 218.5 in the rein work and a division high cow work score of 222.5. Owned by Chown Quarter Horses, 6-year-old Short And Royal, placed 5th at the 2005 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and has earned of over $75,000 with Robert. Chown has another connection to the talented mare – he rode Short And Royal’s sire, Short Oak, to a 5th place finish in the 2006 World’s Greatest Horseman!

Starlights Finale, ridden by Jake Telford, marked 217.5 in the rein work, and 222 down the fence for a 439.5 total. By Grays Starlight and out of Fasa Little Lena, the 5-year-old Starlights Finale is owned by P. Newton White of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Telford, of Caldwell, Idaho, made it back to the Open Hackamore finals on three horses.

Sixteen horses were entered in the Limited Open Hackamore preliminaries and William Meinzer and Some Prefer Whiskey outdistanced the rest of the class by 6.5 points! A 210.5 in the rein work and a 217.5 in the cow work combined for a 428 total. Some Prefer Whiskey, a 5-year-old bay stallion by Paddys Irish Whiskey and out of Ms Becaco Dungin, is owned by Mike Stewart.

Second in the division went to Terrill Heaton and Peeparoo, who had a 421.5 total after marking 209.5 and 212 in the rein and cow work, respectively. Peeparoo, owned by Rancho Vegas Performance Horses, and Heaton were the 2007 NRCHA Limited Open Derby Champions. The 6-year-old mare is by Gallo Del Cielo and out of Peepin Lil.

In the Non Pro Hackamore preliminaries, fifteen exhibitors vied for a spot in the finals, with last year’s Non Pro Hackamore National Champions Tish Wilhite and Hesa Smokin Indian topping the class. The successful pair earned a 431.5 – 9.5 points higher than the riders in second place. They marked a 217.5 in the rein work and 214 in the cow work. Wilhite, from Clovis, California, holds an unprecedented three National titles on three different horses. Hesa Smokin Indian is by Hickorys Indian Pep and out of Baroak Again.

Bart Holowath, on Smart And Rich, and Kelsey Irby, on Dots Classy Peppy, tied for second in the Non Pro Hackamore preliminaries with scores of 422.

Smart And Rich is by Smart Little Baggins and out of Little Rich Doc. He and Holowath, of Cayley, Alberta, Canada, marked a 212 in the rein work and a 210 down the fence. Irby and Dots Classy Peppy marked a 215 and a 207 in the rein and cow work, respectively. Dots Classy Peppy is by Tangys Classy Peppy and out of Dots Quixote.

The NRCHA World Championship Show finals will begin Friday, February 22, and will end Sunday, February 23.
