Open Two Rein Finalists Decided for NRCHA World Championship Show

The World Championship action began at the Fort Dodge Animal Health National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions, held at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, January 31-February 8.

The first class of the NRCHA World Championship Show, presented by John Deere, was the Open Two Rein. The Two Rein stage is considered a transitional phase in traditional reined cow horse training, and combines the already-familiar hackamore with a small bridle. Once the horse reaches the bridle stage of training, he is considered to be the epitome of a cow horse.

The Open Two Rein featured 22 of the nation's top reined cow horses competing for a final's berth. Former World Champions and reigning Regional Champions filled the draw sheet. The field of ten advancing to the finals was led by Jake Telford and Shady Lil Starlight, who marked scores of 221 in the rein and cow work. Owned by Holy Cow Performance Horses LLC, Shady Lil Starlight is the reigning NRCHA Open Hackamore World Champion. After winning that impressive title, Telford and Shady Lil Starlight dominated the Open Two Rein class at NRCHA premier events in 2008. They won three of the four major events - the NRCHA Stallion Stakes, NRCHA Derby, and NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.

The Open Two Rein Finals will be held Friday, February 6, at 8am. A complete list of finalists can be found at http://www.nrcha.com.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2009, is the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes John Deere, Adequan(r), Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today's equine industry.
