2009 Palm Beach Dressage Derby Program Cover Features Beverly Zimmer Sculpture

Loxahatchee, Fl --- The Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W/Y has chosen Beverly Zimmer's sculpture of the Dutch Warmblood stallion Top Gun for the cover of the 2009 program. For 26 years, the Derby has been recognized for its diverse and beautiful cover artwork. Zimmer's magnificent bronze horse head sculpture is an elegant addition to the past art that has graced the cover. This is Zimmer's first time being selected for the cover.

"I always enjoy picking the artwork for the cover and this year was even more special because the sculpture is of Mary Anne's horse," says Evelyn O'Sullivan, longtime show manager of the Derby. Mary Anne McPhail, executive director of the show, not only has been involved with the Derby since the early days, but also has been a passionate dressage aficionado for decades. She commissioned Beverly Zimmer to create bronze sculptures of two horses, Top Gun and Marfil. The sculptures now reside at McPhail's residence in Florida.

"These sculptures mean much more than I can put into words," explains the artist, Beverly Zimmer. "I immortalized two horses that are greatly loved by their owner. Whereas often I take an artist's license, I held back and made the sculptures as realistic as I could. I wanted them to be so lifelike, in personality and measurements, that long after they are gone, the sculptures will be an extremely realistic portrayal of the horses." Both Marfil and Top Gun were successful dressage horses and capture the spirit of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby.

The Derby, February 26-March 1, 2009, is one of the most prestigious dressage competitions in America. It has the honor of holding the record for the largest number of Grand Prix entries in the history of North America. Because of McPhail and O'Sullivan's dedication to dressage, along with top international judging panels, the best horses and riders gather in Florida every winter to compete at the Derby. In addition to the phenomenal competition, the Derby also offers a Derby Series Challenge. The challenge awards cash and prizes to the horse and rider combinations that have the highest averages in Training Level through Grand Prix, at both the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W/Y and Dressage at Equestrian Estates (March 27-29, 2009). In addition, a perpetual trophy is awarded to the adult amateur that scores the highest marks in Grand Prix.

Spectators are welcome all days of the Derby. Admission and parking are free. Visitors can watch top international dressage competition and enjoy great shopping from dozens of vendors.
