Phelps Media Group, Inc. International Adds New Associates Peter and Jean Llewellyn
Equestrian News Release
Wellington, Fl – November 14, 2005 - The Phelps Media Group, Inc. International, (PMG), of Wellington, Florida, today announced the addition of two new associate members to a growing list of talent serving their client base out of the PMG home offices at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, 14440 Pierson Road, Wellington, Florida. Jean and Peter Llewellyn of British Columbia, Canada have come on board as contributing photographers and writers.
Peter Llewellyn has been a professional photographer for over 20 years and is married to international journalist and author, Jean Llewellyn.
During the 1980s, he worked as a general sports photographer covering major events for many of the British national, daily newspapers. This period marked the changeover from primarily black & white imagery to modern color technology. By the end of this decade, the majority of ‘freelance’ sports photographers were beginning to specialize. Because of his professional commitment to several major sponsors, Peter took the equestrian road.
With the equestrian scene focused on mainland Europe, Peter spent the 90s based centrally in France – which facilitated quick and easy access to the majority of major international horse shows. This specialization (not only in horses, but horse people) prompted him to establish HorseSource (http://www.horsesourceltd.com/)- which has become one of the world’s largest photographic agencies for equestrian images – with a historical archive dating back to the late 1800s.
He has covered horse racing, ice hockey and tennis. His photographs from three Olympic Games are sought after world wide, and he’s been the official equestrian photographer at the show facility at Spruce Meadows for the past 17 years.
Jean is a well known journalist, editor, book writer and professional proof reader who's work has been published world wide in many languages. She is currently the editor of Breeding News for Sport Horses, a specialist magazine aimed at the breeding of horses, primarily for the Olympic disciplines. Breeding News for Sport Horses is an entirely independent publication and is the only monthly publication dedicated exclusively to the sport horse breeding industry. Their focus is the FEI disciplines - primarily show jumping, dressage and eventing - on a global basis. Now in its ninth year, Breeding News has become recognized as the leading publication for world-wide information on the breeding scene. Jean was also the principal writer of the 2000 Sydney Olympics Equestrian Program. Jean noted that achievement. “That was peak of recognition for me as a journalist, when I was asked to collaborate on putting together the program for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.”
The Llewellyns moved to Calgary in September 1999 and moved again in December of 2003, this time to Vancouver Island to continue the development of Split Seconds and HorseSource.
Peter Llewellyn looks forward to the change that Phelps Media Group, Inc. International will offer. “I didn’t want to spend my life being a businessman, administering to the website and such, and now was the time to address that issue,” he said. “That’s not what I set out to do. I’m an artist and I want to shoot photographs, and PMG will afford me that chance.”
Llewellyn said that PMG offers an exciting opportunity. “Obviously the company is expanding rapidly and it’s highly professional,” he noted. “I believe that what PMG puts out is absolutely top notch in nature. With exceptions of course, so much of what’s being put out there these days around the world is amateur. Amateur in its outlook and amateur in its content,” he said. “Phelps Media Group is professional in every aspect.”
Jean Llewellyn said that working together with husband Peter as a team is something that she looks forward to. “When we were in Las Vegas, it was the first time Peter and I had worked together as a team for a couple of years,” she said. “So many of the riders came up to us and said ‘it’s so great to see you two working together again as a team,’ and that brought it home to us really. We both have a strong reputation within the equestrian industry as a team, and I think that’s one of the really unique things we’ll be able to offer to Phelps Media Group,” she offered.
“Over the years I’ve learned her style of writing and my photographs are aimed specifically at what she’s writing about. Knowing her style is the big thing,” added Peter.
“The team of Peter and Jean Llewellyn brings a huge amount of combined talent to the table,” said Mason Phelps, Jr., President of Phelps Media Group, Inc. International. “Adding these two exceptionally talented artists, one a writer and the other a photographer, gives us the opportunity to expand our client coverage and helps sets the stage for future PMG projects. The duo will be instrumental to the development of our newest project, Phelps Sports, later this year.” Phelps also noted, “Peter Llewellyn’s huge library of photos adds a level of information and promotional tools that aren’t available anywhere else in the world.”
Llewellyn agreed with Phelps. “It’s one of the largest, if not the largest equestrian photo library in the world. We have images dating back to the late 1800’s. We have material that no one else in the world has. It’s entirely unique.”
Llewellyn looks forward to the future and talked about how rapidly thing have changed for photographers. “I think the changes in the way we operate are the most exciting things photographically. The way we’ve moved from film into digital and the fact that we’re able to get our work out much quicker is the biggest thing,” he said. “Magazines, websites, advertisers and sponsors are able to get our work literally seconds after we take it. In the past, it could be five or six weeks before our work would appear in a magazine. The improvement in digital technology over the past two or three years has really changed the way we work,” he said.
Phelps went on to say, “The year ahead is an exciting year for equestrian sports and it is also going to be a break out year for Phelps Media Group, Inc. International. We’re thrilled that the Llewellyns will be a part of our growth.”
