Shetlands and Miniatures Make a Big Impression at the 122nd National Horse Show

Twenty-nine Shetland Ponies and Miniature Horses welcomed spectators to the 122nd National Horse Show. The troop of small equines paraded around the international arena bearing letters that spelled out Welcome To The National Horse Show as fans roared with delight. Our small equines also entertained the Sunday afternoon spectators with charming driving pairs decked out for their performances. In addition, the petting zoo showcased a 6-month-old miniature filly who stole hearts throughout the weekend. Several National Champion Shetland Ponies also greeted visitors at the National Horse Show’s Family Festival. The small equines were absolute magnets.

It was great to be an integral part of such an esteemed equestrian tradition, said Johnny Robb, Director of Marketing for the American Shetland Pony Club and American Miniature Horse Registry. The Welcoming parade was the brainchild of Victoria McCollough, whose company, Chesapeake Petroleum was a major sponsor for the event. McCollough contacted Robb at the Shetland Pony Club and the wheels were set into motion. Shetland Pony and Miniature Horse owners rallied to provide the champion horses and ponies to carry off the parade. The South Florida Miniature Horse Club joined forces and next thing there were indeed 29 Shetland Ponies and Miniature Horses lined up to carry letters. But it takes a village. The letters simply didn’t fit the small horses and ponies and time was running out. Three top dressage competitors, John Zopatti, Susie Dutta and young rider, Katie Hoog joined forces with farrier, Kelly McGhee to resize the 29 letters in only 25 minutes! The pressure was on, but they prevailed and over 10,000 spectators were treated to an unparalleled Shetland Pony and Miniature Horse Parade.

Special thanks went out to those members of our equestrian community who made the event possible including, Josh Bertrand, Gary Yeager, Alicia Slocumb, Emma Celabrese, Connie Thoreson, Mark and Linda Kerns, Nancy, Tony and Adrianna Lopes, Jessica James, Pat, Jessica and Rebecca Coffey, Tami and Whitney Allmon, Susan Rubin, Julie nelson, Kelly, Karen, Konnor and Kassidy McGhee, Susie and Timmy Dutta, Jody and Ellen Alvarez, John Zopatti, Katie Hoog, Shannon Dueck, Marcia Boeing, Andrea Houghton, and Debbie Hilton.
