Practical Horseman Promotes Eventing Safety

GAITHERSBURG, MD— In support of the objectives of the U.S. Equestrian Federation/U.S. Eventing Association Eventing Safety Summit this past weekend in Lexington, Ky., Practical Horseman magazine has put together a collection of seven articles that address eventing safety, covering topics from riding and training to equine health. The articles are available at http://www.EquiSearch.com and http://www.PracticalHorsemanMag.com.

The selection includes top coach and Olympian Jim Wofford's "Are You Qualified or Are You READY?" which contains a chart to help eventers rate their riding skills. USEA Level 4 instructor Brian Sabo teaches riders how to "Master the Coffin Canter for Safety and Success" in his two-part series covering the theory and how to put it into practice on course. Top eventer Bonnie Mosser shows you how to gallop "fly fences" comfortably out of stride in "Take a Flyer." Finally, veterinarian Dr. Kim McGurrin discusses how to check a horse's heart rate and tailor his conditioning program to make him stronger and fitter in "A Healthy Heart for Top Performance."

In addition to these articles that appeared in past issues of Practical Horseman, there are two exclusive online stories from PracticalHorsemanMag.com: Jim Wofford's "Eventing Lives in the Balance" and award-winning equestrian journalist Nancy Jaffer's "Stemming the Tide of Eventing Tragedies." Nancy also provides coverage of the summit, which you can read about in her online postcards. All articles are currently available on the EquiSearch.com and PracticalHorsemanMag.com homepages and will be archived at http://www.equisearch.com/horses_riding_training/english/eventing/eventing_safety_060608.

The August 2008 issue of Practical Horseman will include the feature "Ensure Eventing's Future," which aims to answer three questions: How statistically dangerous is eventing? What causes do top horsemen think are behind the falls? And what are the likely remedies?

Practical Horseman and EquiSearch.com were proud to sponsor the 2008 USEF/USEA Eventing Safety Summit, a forum for discussing eventing qualifications, course design, education and veterinary/medical issues.
