Nationwide Simulcast Network and Horsemen Join Effort
OPELOUSAS, La., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to the dire need for help and resources for the Louisiana citizens became a top priority for Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino. In an unprecedented move, the racing operation is donating 100% of its revenues from Sunday's, September 4th, racing program to the Acadiana Chapter of the Red Cross Relief Fund. The racetrack is hosting a special night of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing beginning at 6:45 p.m.
"It's a night when our entire racing industry will unite to help our fellow Louisianians who are suffering from this horrific event," said Mike Howard, General manager for Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino. "People have been asking us what they can do to help these victims. This event gives racing fans from all over Acadiana and the United States an opportunity to help."
Hurricane Katrina devastated southeastern Louisiana and the Gulf Coast on Monday. In Washington, the Department of Homeland Security assumed control of the federal response to the disaster, with Secretary Michael Chertoff declaring the overwhelming devastation an "incident of national significance." The White House said today that it would ask Congress for extra money to aid the devastated Gulf Coast region as the federal government tried to cope with what is probably the worst national disaster since September 11, 2001.
"New Orleans is home to one of the oldest racetracks in the United States," said Howard. "Our racing family spends nearly half the year there and our family does its best to take care of one another."
The benefit goes nationwide through the Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino simulcast network. "Everyone who bets on our races Sunday night will be making a contribution to the relief effort," said Howard.
The Sunday night benefit is open to the public at the facility in Opelousas. "This is a time for the whole family to help out," said Howard. "We know that people will turn out. No bet will be too small or too large."

Peninsula Gaming, LLC, is the parent company of Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino in Opelousas, LA. The development is the first new facility of its kind in the United States to be built from the ground up and was completed ahead of schedule. The Casino opened December 19, 2003. The racing operation moved into a totally new facility next to the Casino and began racing on February 5, 2005.
