First Retiree Narrow Escape Euthanized at Old Friends

Georgetown, KY—April 13, 2009—Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends, is sad to announce that the retirement farm has lost its oldest friend.

Narrow Escape, the first Thoroughbred pensioned at the Georgetown, Kentucky facility in 2004, was humanely euthanized on Saturday, April 11 due to complications from colic and the infirmities of old age. She was 26.

The daughter of Exceller—a black-type winner of over $1 million whose life, like Ferdinand's, ended in a slaughterhouse—Narrow Escape was acquired at the February 2004 Fasig-Tipton sale. When she failed to meet her $1000 reserve, owner Barbara Frank of the Ocala-based Frank's Farm, donated the former allowance horse to our program.

Narrow Escape (Exceller—Gantlette by Run the Gauntlet) had 21 lifetime starts with three wins and was trained by Philip Gleaves.

"She was just a wonderful mare,” said Blowen. “And this loss is very hard. She was the Grand Dame of our farm, and with a name like Narrow Escape, it was inevitable that she should end up here,” he added.

A memorial service for Narrow Escape will be announced at a later date. For more information, contact the farm at 502-863-1775.

Located on 1841 Paynes Depot Road in Georgetown , KY , Old Friends is home to more than 30 retired Thoroughbreds, including 16 stallions. Among the many champions are Eclipse Award winners Sunshine Forever and The Wicked North, the great sprinter Ogygian, stakes winner Danthebluegrassman, and millionaire Awad. The farm is open daily to tourists by appointment. For more information on tours, booking rooms at the Old Friends Bed & Breakfast, or to make a donation call 502-863-1775 or see their website at http://www.oldfriendsequine.org
