The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association Welcomes Nevada Joe as its Official Horse Ambassador
Equestrian News Release
DENVER, CO–It is with great excitement that the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) announces NARHA’s Official Horse Ambassador, Nevada Joe. Nevada Joe began life as a wild mustang in Nevada and was adopted in 1995 through the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse Project. His progress through his training at Wahl Corporation’s Equestrian Center was tracked for twelve months in the pages of Horse Illustrated.
Since leaving Wahl’s Equestrian Center, Nevada Joe has had numerous adventures including competing in Cowboy Mounted Shooter events, accompanying his owner in a course to learn trick riding and horse tricks and appearing in rodeos. He currently lives in Darby, MT with Ernie and Diane Purcelli, NARHA certified instructors, at Shooting Star Ranch. It is here that he’s been trained for the role of a lifetime, that of a therapeutic riding horse. Of Nevada Joe’s new role, Diane says “Everywhere I go, I see a growing interest in what can be achieved through therapeutic riding. It is an honor for Nevada Joe to be able to be the Horse Ambassador for NARHA.”
Throughout the year, Nevada Joe, the Wahl Clipper Horse Spokesperson, will be traveling to events across the country with Diane promoting NARHA and equine assisted activities. The goal of Nevada Joe’s Ambassador status is to promote public awareness and to prompt donations for NARHA. “Nevada Joe is an American treasure. He, along with his owner, Diane Purcelli, are the best possible ambassadors to showcase to a new audience the power of equine assisted activities for those with all variety of special needs,” said NARHA executive director, Sheila Kemper Dietrich.
Diane recently presented a well attended demonstration at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo with Nevada Joe. Other tour dates and sponsors may be found on http://www.nevadajoe.net.
About NARHA:
The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association was formed in 1969 to promote equine assisted activities for individuals with special needs. At over 700 member centers, a total of 36,000 children and adults find a sense of independence through involvement with horses. These member centers range from small, one-person programs to large operations with several certified instructors and licensed therapists. In addition to therapeutic equitation, a center may offer any number of equine assisted activities including hippotherapy, equine facilitated mental health, driving, vaulting, trail riding, competition, ground work, or stable management. Through a wide variety of educational resources, the association helps individuals start and maintain successful equine assisted activities programs for individuals with special needs. There are more than 24,000 volunteers, 2000 instructors, 5,700 therapy horses, and thousands of contributors from all over the world helping people at NARHA centers.
