Rodrigo Pessoa & Son of Baloubet du Rouet Notch Another WEF Victory

WELLINGTON, Fla., Mar. 15--Rodrigo Pessoa and Palouchin de Ligny, a son of the great Baloubet du Rouet, Saturday posted his second straight Absorbine Myoplast 1.50-meter victory at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising.

The nine-year-old liver chestnut gelding sired by the recently retired Baloubet who carried Pessoa to the pinnacle of jumping with Olympic gold, three consecutive World Cup Final titles and a slew of other victories, won the Absorbine Myoplast 1.50-meter Classic for the second week in a row in a five-horse jumpoff. They won the same class one week ago, plus two 1.40-meter classes and a 1.45-meter contest at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

The pair were the last to go of 60 entries in the first round and ended up being only the fifth pair to go clear on the course designed by Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela.

The jumpoff was a real international field with Pessoa of Brazil, Ian Millar and Redefin of Canada, Peter Charles and Murkas Pom d'Ami of Great Britain and Louis Jacobs on Kachina and Peter Wylde on Campino 103 of the U.S.

Wylde incurred four faults in the jumpoff while Jacobs was clear. But the rest of the field was fault-free, too, with each ride faster than the one before.

Pessoa and Palouchin de Ligny broke the timers in 32.119 secs, ahead of Millar and Redefin who were second in 32.616 secs. Charles and Murkas Pom d'Ami were third and Jacobs on Kachina fourth.

Of Palouchin's victories in the nine weeks of WEF so far, Pessoa joked that he has not only earned his keep but "for some of his colleagues also."

The gelding does not have the stride to cover a lot of ground, he said, but is fast and is a "fighter" who wants to win.
