Roger Barral and The Ultimate Magnum Win SWRHA Futurity Show Limited Open

Roger Barral earned the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity Horse Show Limited Open Championship on The Ultimate Magnum with a score of 221.5. That high score garnered owner Jean Defrates Piper a check for $374, a pewter trophy, and a special Cruisin’ Cooler.

Although Barral had to leave the show immediately after the class, Piper was quick to share her excitement about the win. “This is so exciting! Roger does a great job showing, and this horse is very special to me,” she noted.

Piper raised the 4-year-old Magnum Chic Dream gelding, who was out of her mare, Queen De La Club. Unfortunately, Queen De La Club died when The Ultimate Magnum was only four days old. “She was pretty special. My husband, Nathan, had showed her in the Non Pro before he became an Open rider, and gave her to me when we were engaged. It tore me up when she died, so this horse really has a special place in my heart,” she said.

Nathan trained The Ultimate Magnum until about a month before the National Reining Horse Association Futurity, when Barral took over the reins. Although they missed the Futurity Finals, they’ve made up for it this year. “Roger gets all the credit. He really can get so much out of him. We’re very lucky to have this horse, and Roger to show him.”

The Limited Open Reserve Champion title went to Roy Van Der Hoeven, who rode Hot Little Step to a score of 220.5. That score was enough to make him a big winner as it also earned the Reserve title in the Intermediate Open, and the Championship in the Rookie Professional. All in all, Van Der Hoeven and the Wimpys Little Step mare, out of Hot Little Lady, earned over $800. Hot Little Step is owned by Schols and Loseke.

The SWRHA Futurity is held annually at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma. It runs from October 21-October 26, and boasts added money of over $135,000.
