San Mans Image Wins 2007 Limited Open Bridle World Championship

“This accomplishment is the one I’m most proud of,” admitted trainer Doug Stroud just after winning the National Reined Cow Horse Association Limited Open Bridle Championship on San Mans Image. Their 426.5 score (210.5/216) actually tied with Whiskey Starlight and Blue Allen, but Stroud’s cow work score tipped the scales in his favor to break the tie.

“He was a little tired today, and was a little off in the reining,” explained Stroud. “But he was great down the fence.”

But the 9-year-old gelding had reason to be a little tired – Stroud is also competing on him in the World’s Greatest Horseman, and the rein work was last night. Immediately after the awards ceremony, “San Man” was taken back to his stall to rest up for the evening, where he will compete again in the World’s Greatest steer stopping and cow work.

“Regardless of what happens, I’m thrilled. This means so much to me to win here,” the Snohomish, Washington trainer noted. “The roping (steer stopping) and cow work are his strongest areas, so we’re looking forward to it.”

This is the first time Stroud has made the 2,585 mile trip to Stephenville, and the 50-year-old trainer is planning on making it to the next NRCHA World Show.

As for San Man, Stroud hopes to transition him back to his owner, Tina Peterson of Twenty Eights LLC. “She’s a great rider, and I would love for her to ride again. I’ve ridden horses for her longer than anyone else – over twenty years.”

San Mans Image, by Sanman Badger and out of Branded Plumb Dry, ended the year as the NRCHA Limited Open Bridle Reserve National Champion, as well.

Blue Allen and Whiskey Starlight also marked a 426.5 (216/210.5), and took home the Limited Open Bridle Reserve Championship. Whiskey Starlight, owned by Mitch and Christa Guerrieri, of Franktown, Colorado. The 9-year-old stallion is by Starlights Joy and out of Whiskey Princess.

When the points were tabulated, Docs Legacy Chex had become the 2007 NRCHA Limited Open Bridle National Champion. Docs Legacy Chex, by Doctors Kit and out of Legacy Chex, is owned by Carrie Cash, of Redlands, California and was ridden by Tony Mendoza.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse.
