Sandy Ferrell & Bolero Win First Year Green Hunters

WELLINGTON, Fla., Mar. 27--Sandy Ferrell and Bolero were champion of the First Year Green Hunters at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising Thursday.

Ferrell, of Burnsville, Penn. and the eight-year-old grey gelding, Bolero, owned by Staci Arani and Marigot Bay Farm of Dover, Mass. placed first in the initial trip over fences with a score of 85 and first in the second trip with a score of 84.

Bolero and Farrell have been consistently in the high ribbons all circuit and are contenders for circuit champion. The pair competed together in the Hunter Classic Spectacular in February.

Reserve honors went to Maggie Jayne of Elgin, Ill. and the 10-year-old bay gelding, Gianni, owned by junior rider Kelsey Thatcher of Salt Lake City. The pair won an over fences class on Wednesday as well as the under saddle.

Thatcher bought Gianni in August, 2007 and this was her second week showing him in the Junior Hunters.

"Yesterday he was really good," Kelsey said. " Today he had one mistake in each class."

The red ribbon in the first class over fences with a score of 84, was awarded to the six-year-old bay mare, Aura, owned by Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Caristo of Saugerties, N.Y. and ridden by Jenny Fischer of Montgomery, N.Y. Aura was bought in Switzerland last year. She did a couple shows this summer and started WEF in the First Year Green Hunter division.

"She is a good jumper, very consistent and jumps every jump well," Jenny said. "I thought she went great the first round but she trotted over a shadow at the end of the ring that killed the second round. She jumped brilliantly just bad luck."

Second place in the second trip, with a score of 83, was awarded to the five-year-old chestnut gelding, Pure Abundance, and rider Wayne Mc Lellan of Toronto, Canada. Pure Abundance is owned by Wesley Newlands also of Toronto.

Pure Abundance was bought at the beginning of WEF and started in the First Year Green Hunters three weeks ago. He also shows in the adult hunters.

"He has great character and a great way of going," Wayne said. "He is getting a little tired but the second round was very good."
