Sarah Winters Wins 2008 Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Hackamore on Hip Addams

While the focal point of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity is the 3-year-old competition that will make up the bulk of the over $1.3 million payout, it also boasts a full slate of NRCHA approved classes.

The Limited Open Hackamore class was run concurrently with the Open Hackamore preliminaries on October 1. Twenty-three horses competed in the $1,500 added Limited Open Hackamore.

When the dust had cleared the arena, Sarah Winters, of Ojai, California, had earned the Championship on Hip Addams.

“He was a really good boy, and just did everything he was supposed to do. He was good in the rein work and had two really good fence turns,” explained Sarah of her horse’s scores of 216 in the rein work and 216.5 down the fence.

Sarah’s father, Richard Winters, purchased Hip Addams a few months after he had made the Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Finals with Boyd Rice. “Dad was nice enough to let me show him here. I really appreciate him letting me have the chance,” noted the 19-year-old of “Hip,” by Hickorys Indian Pep and out of Wednesday Addams.

Sarah has already won many titles as a youth competitor, including a World Championship and major event wins, and plans to start a training career with her father, who is an accomplished trainer and clinician.

Sarah earned $2,352 for the win, and also collected a Gist Silversmiths Champion Buckle sponsored by One Time Pepto and Jeffrey Mathews, a horse hair Mecate from Krause Mecates and San Benito Braiding, a Cinch monogrammed vest from Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers/Outlaw Conversions, and Platinum Performance.

The Reserve title went to Todd Fitch and What Happened Uno, who marked scores of 212.5 in the rein work and 211.5 in the cow work, for a 623.5 total. Owned by Vance and Joann Ward, of Arbon, Idaho, What Happened Uno won $1,932, a horse hair Mecate from Krause Mecates and San Benito Braiding, a Cinch monogrammed vest from Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers/Outlaw Conversions, and Platinum Performance.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Adequan®, Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
