Shelby Wakeman of Karen Healey Stables Places Third in 2007 ASPCA Maclay National Championship

Syracuse, NY - November 6, 2007 - Karen Healey Stables attended this year's Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament, which hosted the 2007 ASPCA Maclay National Championship. Shelby Wakeman of Westlake Village, CA, finished third in this year's prestigious event.

Wakeman is 16-years-old and competed on San Francisco, the horse she rode to top placings at the Capital Challenge Horse Show and fourth place in the USEF/Pessoa Medal Finals in Harrisburg, PA. Wakeman had a solid first round over fences and was called back for the flat phase. From there, she was asked back for a second round of jumping. Out of the 18 riders asked back for the second round, Wakeman was placed ninth.

In the second round, Wakeman was on her game. She had no trouble with the twisting, turning course, and San Francisco jumped wonderfully. After her round, Wakeman said, "I really didn't have anything to lose. I just wanted to go in and have a good round. Hopefully it would all work out." For her great ride, the judges moved her up to third place for the final standings. It was a great finish to the year for the talented rider.

In addition to Wakeman's success, two other riders finished in the top ten of the ASPCA Maclay National Championship. Redmond, WA, resident Carly Anthony, who is also trained by her mother Cara Anthony, finished in fourth place on Apollo. Michelle Morris on Eventual finished in sixth place. Anthony won her section of the Maclay Warm-up, and Tina DiLandri was third in another warm-up section.

Healey was proud of Wakeman's ability to stay cool under pressure and move up in the standings, like she did two weeks ago in the medal finals. "Sometimes it's a better spot (to be lower in the standings) because you just go in and give it your best. Instead of protecting your round, you go for it. It's better to lose trying to win than not to try," she said.

Shelby is "a real fighter," Healey described. "It's an unbelievable match with that horse. He's a special horse. He's a funny temperament, and you have to know how to deal with him. She rides him beautifully."

Karen Healey Stables returns to the West Coast to compete next at the National Preview Horse Show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Nov. 7-11, 2007.
