Show Jumping gets underway at NAJYRC

Parker, Colorado.

Show Jumping got underway at the North American Junior Young Riders Championships today at the Colorado Horse Park, and the competition was fast and furious. The first classes are individual qualifiers for both Juniors (FEI 14-18) and Young Riders (FEI 16-21), and are run as speed classes. Scores from today’s rounds figure into the overall standings as riders vie for individual medals.

The Juniors kicked off the morning and faced a challenging test set by Olaf Petersen, Jr. Out of 33 riders, only eight managed clear rounds, and Shannon McGrath representing USA Zone 2 laid down the fastest clear round of the day aboard Ancho de Pomme. Although Zone 2 did not come with a full complement of riders, Chef de Equipe Ralph Caristo felt that he had strong riders. Juan Pedro Vazquez Arollo representing Mexico - North finished a close second with Montecristo. Rounding out the top three was Theo Genn and Cohiba of USA Zone 5.

Zone 10 riders put in very solid performances. Lucy Davis and Mister Mind finished fourth in the class and earned a valuable clear round toward the overall standings. Savannah Carr and Quiana were the slowest of the eight clear rounds, but in the overall standings a clear round is a clear round, and the time does not matter. Carr was even more amazing as her horse jumped quite hard at the final oxer, jumping her loose. She clung to her horse’s neck and managed to clear the timers before dropping to the ground. She showed the grit and determination necessary in a team competition. Annie Laurie Cook was putting in a blazing fast round aboard Tucker when they dropped the last rail. A clear round would have put them in first, but with only four faults Cook is very competitive in the overall standings. Shelby Wakeman and Pandoer also had a solid four fault round, and Alex Lawler and Toyster Gold finished with 12 faults.

After a course adjustment and walk, the Young Riders tackled their speed course and Olaf Pedersen, Jr. gave riders two different options: one at fence 2 and another at fence 5. Riders utilized both options. Last year’s individual and team gold medalist, Karl Cook showed that he arrived to win by blazing around the course with Notories Utopia. Cook ended with an almost four second lead over second place finisher, Kristen Vanderveen of USA Zone 5. Because of the way the scoring is done, Karl now carries zero penalties as the winner of the first class. After dividing by a coefficient and then subtracting the difference of the scores, Vanderveen has a score of 1.85. Jaclyn Duff and Pan Tau 55 of Alberta, Canada took third, followed by two Zone 10 riders. Paige Dotson was fourth and Hannah Selleck was right on her heels for fifth. Unfortunately Haley Roberson faced some difficulties with RMW Ron and the pair did not get around the course. However, she is still eligible to ride in tomorrow’s competitions.

Tomorrow is "team day" run under a Nations Cup format. Team medals will be determined for both Juniors and Young Riders, and riders will additionally have both rounds count as their second and third individual qualifiers. The riders will be feeling the pressure, and for some it is their first experience in a team environment.
