Smoky Pritchett and Jasons Peptolena Win Penny Knight & Drag N Fly Ranch Open Bridle Spectacular Herd Work

Along with being a premiere limited age event, the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes offers a full slate of NRCHA approved classes. The headline event for this event is the Penny Knight & Drag N Fly Ranch Bridle Spectacular.

Bridle Spectacular horses are the most highly schooled horses in the reined cow horse industry. These classes differ from regular bridle classes in that they also include herd work, so the horses perform in three events, like they did as futurity and derby horses. In the Vaquero tradition, a horse only becomes a bridle horse after years of training so it’s fitting that this Open Bridle Spectacular will reward the winner with a check for $5,880.

The herd work phase of the competition was held Thursday, March 27, as 18 Open horses and riders took to the arena stage. Two half siblings held the top two spots, with Jasons Peptolena, ridden by Smoky Pritchett, earning a 219.5 for a half-point lead.

The 7-year-old red roan stallion is by legendary sire Peptoboonsmal, and out of Amys Little Date, by Smart Little Lena. He has won over $60,000 in NRCHA and National Cutting Horse Association events, including Open Championships at the 2006 NRCHA Stakes and Hackamore Classic. His rider, Pritchett, is an NRCHA Hall of Fame inductee, who has numerous Championships to his name. Jasons Peptolena is owned by Terry Ratto, of Los Altos, California.

Former Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Jon Roeser piloted Boons Royal Legacy to second in the herd work with a 219. Last year the pair finished in the top 5 of the NRCHA Stakes Open Bridle, and hopes to improve on that finish this year. Owned by Brian and Cynthia Holthouse of San Juan Bautista, California, Boons Royal Legacy is by Peptoboonsmal and out of Smogy Doc, by Doc Jensen.

The Bridle Spectaculars held at NRCHA Produced Events were created to celebrate and reward the finished bridle horses that represent the “ultimate” reined cow horses trained in the vaquero tradition. The bridle stage follows the snaffle bit, hackamore, and two-rein training and represents years of careful practice and work.

The rein and cow work portions of the Penny Knight & Drag N Fly Ranch Open Bridle Spectacular will be held Saturday, March 29, with awards to follow.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
