Sophia Gali Leads Devon Pony Hunt Team to Victory

DEVON, PA—MAY 26, 2008— When it cam e time for the Pony Hunt Teams at this year’s Devon Horse Show, the poms poms were…well, on actually.

Exemplifying the theme High School Never Ends, “cheerleader” Sophia Gali, of Potomac, MD, led her riders—“nerd” Ashley Foster and “football jock” Parker Wright—to victory in the small pony division of the entertaining costume competition that has become one of the grand traditions of Devon.

Gali entered the ring aboard her own Miss Australia, flanked by a Foster aboard Hillcrest Blue Snip, and Wright, aboard Grand Finale. As is custom, the trio first presented the judges with a “gift,” this one a selection of back to school supplies, including a new backpack, several American Express gift cards, and, of course, an apple. Then they galloped the six obstacle course to a rock & roll soundtrack, nailing the last jump in sync to impress the crowd.

“We just came up with the idea when we were trying to think of things to do at Devon,” said Gali of how they chose their high school theme. “We really only got to practice in the warm up ring. But it was just great!”

“I’m just so proud of them,” said Patty Foster, who trains Gali and her daughter Ashley at Maryland’s Rolling Acres Farm (Wright trains with Bill Schaub). “I had to take Ashley to the boys department to picked out everything she wanted for her costume,” laughed Foster. “That was a little disturbing!”

Gali’s squad bested two other well-dressed teams, “The Biker Girls” and “The Wizard of Oz.”

“This was a blast and just a great thing for the kids,” continued Foster—something that isn’t about money or anything like that. It’s just great fun.”

In the Medium Pony division, meanwhile, Lucille Oken of Charlotte N.C. led her gold-lame -clad “Bond Girls” to 2nd place.

Oken’s team, which included Jenna Santi and Alexa Boggio, rode to the famous spy’s electric theme after Boggio’s brother, Chase, presented judges with a

selection of “bondian” gifts, including gourmet cheeses and a martini set (shaken, but not stirred, of course).

“My mom and Mrs. Boggio helped us with our costumes,” said Oken following the award presentation. “It was so much fun—this is really my favorite part of Devon.”
