Lexington, KY – May 3, 2007 - The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, which will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington during the weeks of May 9-13 and May 16-20, 2007, are pleased to announce that Bobby Murphy, the assistant manager of the Kentucky Horse Shows, and Betsy Fishback, the director of community relations, have created a community outreach program.
The hands-on program “Supporting and Promoting Equine Awareness in Kentucky’s Schools” (SPEAKS) educates elementary schools and designated groups about horses, general care and equestrian competitions. The program provides on-site education for young members of the community, and participants include Girl and Boy Scout troops, church youth groups and other local organizations.
Held during the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, SPEAKS gives children the opportunity to learn about equestrian sports, equine nutrition and safety equipment. The Kentucky Horse Park is the future site of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and is home to the United States Equestrian Federation, and SPEAKS will help generate interest in the upcoming games and international sport horse competitions.
On Saturday, May 12, over 750 Girl Scouts and their families will attend the Kentucky Spring Horse Show and partake in SPEAKS. The scouts will observe horses during competition and enjoy first-hand interaction with riders, horses and equine experts.
“We have also invited 25 school groups from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio to participate during the two weeks of the show,” said Betsy Fishback. “We are thrilled because KEEP, the Kentucky Equine Educational Project, has agreed to help fund the program this year.”
“In addition, we’re getting some help from a magazine called ‘The Horse.’ It’s putting together some educational stations for us, which is great. Bobby and I went over the stations yesterday, and we really have some fun, exciting and different things planned. The stations will educate the kids about all of the different breeds and equestrian disciplines, and I think it will be fun and exciting for them to see the horses close up.”
She added, “I’m really looking forward to having the kids come out, especially with all of the Olympians that will be there this year. It will be neat for them to see all of the great athletes and great horses, which will give the kids a taste of what’s to come down the road.”
The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will also feature the exciting summer-long Hagyard Challenge Jumper Series, which is a series of major show jumping competitions. The Hagyard Challenge Jumper Series features $170,000 in prize money and will kick off on Thursday, May 10, with the $30,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix. In addition to jumper action, the horse show will host the 2007 Legacy Cup, and the first week of the show is a World Championship Hunter Rider recognized hunter competition.
