Springsteen Produces 'Sublime' Performance in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under Division

Wellington, FL – January 27, 2007 – The young hunter riders had their first day in the spotlight at the 2007 Winter Equestrian Festival, and Jessica Springsteen piloted her horse Sublime to the championship in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under division this morning.

The bay gelding, at 9 years old, lived up to his name of being worthy of adoration, and is owned by Stone Hill Farm. The pair took first and second places in Friday’s over fences classes and had second place finishes on Saturday morning for a total of 28 points.

Springsteen commented, “I got him two years ago in Florida and this is our third year showing (at WEF). He’s a lot of fun. Sometimes he can be a little bit hard, but he’s getting a lot better. When we got him he was only six… He’s gotten a lot smoother and everything.”

She added that at the Washington International Horse Show in October, the last show the pair attended, they ended up as reserve champion. The Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under reserve champion today was Savannah and Casey Green with 26 points.

In the Grand Hunter Ring, the Amateur-Owner Hunter 18 through 35 division wrapped up with Laura Sexton and Renaissance earning the championship spot. A native of Greenwich, CT, Sexton stays for the entire circuit and said she will look to compete Renaissance again next month. The pair, over two days, took two firsts and two seconds in the over fences classes. Despite having owned the 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood for about five years, this is their first WEF championship together due to a few injuries and setbacks.

“It’s been a little while. I had him – my senior year in high school I got him – and that January I did my first show down here at Littlewood and got bucked off of him and broke my hip. I couldn’t ride for about six months and just started getting back with him, and then he had an injury. He was out for about a year and a half, 2 years. Ever since then, he’s been fantastic,” Sexton commented.

She continued, “He’s pretty lazy most of the time, but he’s so much fun – the way he jumps, you just can’t compare it to anything else that I’ve ridden, at least. He’s fantastic. We try not to show him that much. We…probably won’t show again until next month. We’ll keep him fresh and that’s when he jumps like this.”

On Friday, Kacey McCann of SBS Farm proved to be a multi-talented rider with Idol, winning the hunter phase and taking third in the jumper phase of the WIHS Equitation class to take the overall award. McCann, who rides with Susie Schoellkopf, admitted she was thrilled with her success.

“This is the first time I’ve showed the horse, and only the second time I jumped and rode the horse, so it was pretty cool – not to mention that I haven’t shown since the National,” McCann noted. “I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I’m so excited about this new horse, he’s amazing. He’s super easy and he’s got such a great attitude. He jumps great out of any distance, and he’s a very good listener.”

She added that she wanted to thank Jimmy Torano for his help this weekend, in addition to helping her prepare the horse for the class. He also was responsible for finding the horse for SBS Farm. McCann’s win qualified her for the Winter Equestrian Festival Equitation Championship for the R.W. ‘Ronnie’ Mutch Trophy, which will be held on March 18, 2007.
