Steelman’s Wild Mustangs Gallop into 2008 on Rocky Mountain Horse Expo Art Calendar

When advertisement is transformed by artwork, the product is memorable. Even collectible. Recently the acclaimed international photographer Claude Steelman contributed his image, “No Holding Back,” to the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, who then put this fine artwork to fine effect in an art calendar-poster promoting the three 2008 Horse Expos. This is the first in a planned series of annual calendars from the RMHE, with the intention of shining a daily spotlight on the beauty and drama of the horse.

The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo is honored to team with Mr. Steelman, who has made his mark as a professional nature photographer for the past 25 years. During his remote travels he has captured images of a wide and wild range of life from jungle bats to polar bears. The resulting photographs have appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, such as National Wildlife Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Outdoor Photographer, and National Geographic World. Four of his images even take regular flight on the tails of Frontier Airlines planes. Steelman is also an accomplished cinematographer whose numerous documentary nature films have aired internationally; viewers in the U.S. have enjoyed his work on the National Geographic Channel, PBS, The Discovery Channel, and HBO. His stock numbers more than 100,000 images, and is still growing. He is founder and president of Wildshots, Inc., a publisher of fine art prints, posters, and notecards, and is the author of two books, Colorado for the First Time and Durango Country (Western Reflections Publishing).

About “No Holding Back”: Steelman snapped the shutter on the cascade of running horses at the 2005 gather of the Spring Creek mustangs of Disappointment Valley, CO. An admirer of the perseverance, mind and athleticism of the mustang, Steelman recently spent several months photographing all four of Colorado’s wild herds; a collection of images personalized by his close acquaintance with these horses will be published in the spring of 2008. “These are excellent animals,” Steelman says. “I want to emphasize the adoption possibilities.” In fact, so enamored has he become with the spirited mustang, he plans to adopt one in 2008.

No novice to horses, the renowned photographer worked in his youth as a dude ranch wrangler and spent some rodeo time bareback on broncs. “Not much time,” he says with a laugh. “Very few seconds, actually, before I decided I was better off behind the lens than in front of it.” But his photographs stand as proof of his unfailing equine interest.

Preview the art calendar at http://www.RockyMountainHorseExpo.com. The cost is $5; proceeds support the legislative work of the Colorado Horse Council. Or get one with your 2008 membership in the Colorado Horse Council. The CHC will be selling the calendar (and memberships) at the National Western Stock Show and Rocky Mountain Horse Expos. The calendar can also be obtained through the RMHE website, above, or by phone at (303) 292-4981. The artist will sign calendars at the Wildshots booth at the Denver Horse Expo.

Wildlife meets ranch life at all three 2008 Rocky Mountain Horse Expos: Denver, March 14-16; Vail/Eagle Valley, May 30-June 1; and Southwest (Ignacio), September 19-21. Don’t miss a moment of these premium events—your art calendar is already marked for you.
