Tammy Johnston and Quanah Dual Top Circle Y Ranch Derby Non Pro Herd Prelims

Tammy Johnston was all smiles after the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby herd work ended on Saturday, February 16. For years, she has worked diligently behind the scenes to help her husband, Lance – but that has begun to change. She and her horse, Quanah Dual, marked a 144 in the herd work, to lead both the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro divisions.

“I am so excited. I know we still have to get through two more events, but this was the kind of confidence booster I needed,” the Lindsay, California, native explained.

Johnston and the 5-year-old Dual Reward gelding have had trouble getting together, despite having competed at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2006. Prior to the Futurity, Johnston had suffered a few injuries, keeping her out of the saddle for much of the time. Then Quanah Dual was laid off because of a few soundness issues until the beginning of December.

“I’m so happy to finally be here, and getting to show such a great horse,” admitted Johnston. “But I have to say, I wouldn’t be here without the help of my trainer, who got Quanah Dual and I working well together. He’s the best trainer I know!”

Of course, her trainer is her husband, Lance, the 2007 Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champion, who is also showing at the Celebration of Champions. “He was pretty happy with me,” she noted.

Another fan of Johnston is her 8-year-old son, Trystan, who had to stay home in California. “He had a basketball game today, and he called to see how I did and to tell me he did well,” she said. “I got to tell him I did well, too!”

Michelle Cowan, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, piloted Reward Me Please to a 143, for second in the Non Pro, while McKenzie Merrill, of Weatherford, TX, marked 141.5 to move into second in the Intermediate Non Pro division on Captain 327. Reward Me Please is by Chic Please and out of Reward Me Peppy, while Captain 327 is by Hickorys Indian Pep and out of Mac O Lena Queen.

Karla Rogers, of Lipan, TX, rode BJ Chula Mula to top the Amateur division herd work. Rogers and the Chula Dual stallion, out of BJ Tari, marked a 145 to lead the class. Sarah Sherman, Yelm, Washington, riding Educating The Chics, marked a 142 for second in the division.
