WELLINGTON, FL – March 9, 2007 – The sixth edition of the PhelpsSports.com Challenge of the Americas presented by Collecting Gaits Farm is set to kick off tomorrow evening, March 10, at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida. The annual fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) will showcase a new format this year with a total of 30 horses and riders on three teams competing in Grand Prix dressage musical freestyles and a thrilling high jump for the title of “PhelpsSports Challenge Team of the Americas.”
Morgan Stanley returns for the second consecutive year to sponsor Team International. “Morgan Stanley and the Seley Parker Group are happy to be involved for a second year,” said Joshua G. Parker, financial advisor in Morgan Stanley’s Seley Parker Group. “It’s a great cause and performance.”
Launched in 1993, the BCRF’s cause is the prevention and cure of breast cancer in our lifetime. The BCRF has steadily increased its fundraising efforts and in 2006 the organization raised $27 million to help fund the world’s leading breast cancer researchers. The BCRF directs a minimum of 85 cents on each dollar raised to the cause.
Parker explained what impact he feels Morgan Stanley’s sponsorship will have on creating awareness of breast cancer and breast cancer research, saying, “The more resources and attention you can provide to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the better the chance of success.”
In this year’s PhelpsSports Challenge, the three teams are comprised of eight dressage riders and two show jumpers. The dressage riders will perform in two Grand Prix musical freestyle formats – the Pas de Deux (two horses and riders) and the quadrille (six horses and riders). The show jumpers will compete in a high jump format. A gala dinner/dance follows the competition. Parker shared his thoughts on the PhelpsSports Challenge as an entertainment/sport/social package, noting, “The Challenge is tremendous fun. The horses and riders are very talented. And the gala is a blast.”
At the 2006 PhelpsSports Challenge, more than 1,600 fans enjoyed the competition and 600 patrons wined, dined and danced at the gala, raising a total of over $225,000 in one evening for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Parker noted his expections for the 2007 PhelpsSports Challenge, enthusing, “We expect the dressage to be even better than last year and hopefully we can exceed last year’s fundraising for the BCRF.”
The teams competing for the 2007 title of “PhelpsSports Challenge Team of the Americas” will showcase the riders in three segments. The show jumpers will kick off the event with a high jump contest that counts for 25% of the total score. The dressage riders will then compete in two dressage-to-music formats – the Pas de Deux (two riders and two horses), which counts for 25% of the total score, and the Quadrille (six horses and six riders), which counts for 50% of the total score.
