Telford, Shady Lil Starlight Top Open Two Rein at NRCHA Derby

Jake Telford rode Shady Lil Starlight to win the Open Two Rein class at the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby held June 17-22 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.

Shady Lil Starlight is a proven champion for Telford, who has been riding the 6-year-old stallion by Grays Starlight and out of Shady Little Cat for two years. Last year, the pair won the Open Hackamore World Championship, and earlier this year, won the Two Rein class at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes.

As temperatures in California hit record highs this week, Telford said he had been worried prior to showing the horse.

“It was hard to warm him up tonight because it was so hot, I didn’t want him to get over-tired,” Telford explained. “Then it was decided to do the cow work after the rein work, so then I was worried that I didn’t have him warmed up enough! But it worked out just right. He’s always pretty trustworthy and consistent.”

Temperatures quickly fell as the sun went down on another day at the Derby. Telford and Shady Lil Starlight drew a tough cow to take down the fence, but in the end, it all paid off with a winning score of 294. The pair earned $2,130 for owner, Holy Cow Performance Horses of Santa Ynez, California.

Earning Reserve honors, as well as a check for $1,704 was Jimmy Stickler riding Wild N Seven for a score of 293. Wild N Seven, owned by Rancho Paridiso, is by Footworks Finest and out of Kisma Brass Jac.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and GASTROGARD, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
