Alexandra Thornton Wins USEF Medal at Kentucky Spring Horse Show

Tobasco is Champion in Junior Hunters; Naomi Takes Blue in Junior Jumpers

Lexington, KY- May 15, 2007 - Alexandra Thornton of Bedminster, NJ, crossed a new milestone this past week at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show. The 13-year-old, who frequents the winner's circle in the junior hunter division, won the USEF Hunter Seat Medal for the very first time on Sunday, May 13. Thornton trains with Susie Humes, an established instructor and judge in the equestrian industry.

"The medal was really exciting," smiled Thornton after her win. "The test was really hard, but it was so cool that we ended up winning. My horse Samson is really fun to ride, and he's been great for the equitation. He does what you want, and he's a good sport. I really enjoy riding him even though I'm still getting used to him."

"She only started doing the 3'6'' equitation a few months ago," commented Humes. "It is a new challenge for her. Samson is a wonderful horse, but she doesn't know him that well. She got an 85 and an 83 in the Washington equitation and the Children's Medal, and then she really pulled it together for the USEF medal. It wasn't just ok; it was really good," she noted.

"Her test was brilliant. Samson was a jumper in Europe, and we got him from Susie Schoellkopf, who was developing him as an equitation horse. He's very scopey and brave, and he's very comfortable. He's a good size for her. Phil [Kiley] has him looking terrific. We had a great week," added Humes. "I'm thrilled that Alexandra won in the junior hunters, the junior jumpers, and in the big equitation. That is hard to do and a great accomplishment for a young rider who has only been seriously competing for less than two years. It is a testament to her talent, work ethic and, of course, her family's guidance and support."

Thornton captured fifth place in the ASPCA Maclay and also competed successfully in the jumper arena with Saint Exupery in the Children's Jumpers and Naomi in the Low Juniors. She earned the blue ribbon with Naomi and ended up with the reserve championship for the Low Junior Jumper division.

In the Small Junior 15 and Under Hunters, Thornton and Tobasco were champions once again, and they took home two firsts, two seconds, and a sixth. The pair, who won countless tricolors during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, continues to top the charts.

"Tobasco was really good. I haven't ridden in awhile, so I was kind of getting back into it on the first day," admitted Thornton. "The horses were having a break in Florida, and they just came up here last week. I took some time to catch up with school, so I've been in New Jersey. I'm definitely pleased with how we did."

The Dunwalke horses will show next week with Thornton at the Kentucky Spring Classic Horse Show, held in Lexington, KY, from May 16-20 at the Kentucky Horse Park.
