First Three Phase Event, Inc. T.E.D. Clinic a Hugh Success

Three Phase Event, Inc. hosted its first Training, Education and Development (T.E.D.) clinic on dressage for gaited horses and riders, September 5th, at the Kentucky Equestrian Center, in Winchester, Kentucky. The full day schedule included a lecture-demonstration and a full afternoon of dressage tests. The clinician, Betty Ortlieb, a United States Dressage Federation judge, presided over the event and was warmly welcomed by all who attended.

During the morning session two riders demonstrated some of the do's and don'ts that horse and riders experience in the early stages of learning dressage. Having the riders do an exercise incorrectly, then discussing the error and ways to correct it gave the attendees a chance to ask questions and discuss the various solutions with Ms. Ortlieb. The demonstrators then rode the exercise correctly with Ms. Ortlieb reviewing the changes so that the attendees could recognize the corrections after the discussion.

At the lunch break, Ms. Ortlieb sat with the attendees and graciously answered questions during the meal. After lunch, each attendee saddled his or her horse the group included Rocky Mountain, Kentucky Mountain, Tennessee Walking and Paso Fino breeds and rode the dressage test of choice. After the test, Ms. Ortlieb, spoke with each rider, addressing the good points and the problem areas she observed in the test. She often sent the rider back out to the arena and instructed the rider on how to tweak or correct something she had observed. Ms. Ortlieb broke down the components of the test so that the rider could understand any changes or adjustments that could be seen or felt with the horse. Her undivided attention to each rider, was genuinely appreciated and each rider, armed with a copy of his or her test, left the arena knowing his or her strengths and weaknesses and how to work to improve upon them.

The clinic was such a success that many of the attendees wanted to know when there would be another one. Because of the enthusiasm of the participants, plans are in the works to host another clinic before the end of the year.
